"My first word as a baby was 'lipstick,'" says actor Adria Arjona, who's starring in next year's thriller Morbius, with Jared Leto. She's also the face of Giorgio Armani's new sustainably sourced floral perfume My Way, and — as you've probably guessed — a lifelong beauty lover.
Since her childhood, she's felt a profound connection to the power of scent, and now, it's all come full circle. "I started my discovery of finding my own smell or certain smells that I really love or really enjoy, and the journey's been long, and now I'm the face of one, which is absolutely insane," she tells Allure.
When Arjona speaks about fragrance, specifically the new tuberose, vanilla, and bergamot scent, you can hear the smile in her voice. "I find it to be quite beautiful how scent can transport you in time and take you [back] to all these experiences and memories that you have."
And in her new unretouched My Way campaign, her smile, strength, and naturalistic approach to beauty shine through. "You can see my little smile wrinkle, and that's one of my favorite things of the whole shot. It tells you, 'This woman smiles," she says. "I want to give people the idea to feel confident in their own skin. Whether they have good skin or bad skin, it's part of you and it's quite beautiful, and we should all embrace ourselves."
Allure had the chance to chat with Arjona on the phone a few months ago to learn more about her new role with Armani, her relationship with beauty, and more.
ALLURE: What was one of your earliest beauty lessons?
ARJONA: "My mom was a beauty queen. I grew up [in Mexico City] with a lot of beauty in my house. [She] would wear a vibrant red lip [with] a bare face — no mascara, no concealer, no nothing. To this day, it’s one of my favorite looks."
ALLURE: What was your first beauty product?
ARJONA: "[As a kid], I learned about the secret of ice. When you don't have much money, and you're going from tiny little town to tiny little town, you discover ice has benefits for your skin. [Arjona toured with her father, Guatemalan singer-songwriter Ricardo Arjona]. And now I ice my face before a day of filming. I glide it on in a lifting motion. You feel firm after."
ALLURE: You grew up traveling. What are some of your favorite beauty products or traditions you've learned about while traveling?
ARJONA: "In Mexico, people use a lot of aloe vera to soothe skin and help with dark spots. In Guatemala, they put lemon all over their faces at night, and then scrub it out in the morning. That also helps with dark spots. Those are little things I've learned that are inexpensive, and they've been handed down." [Ed note: Please consult your dermatologist before applying raw lemon directly to your face.]
ALLURE: What's your most nostalgic scent from childhood?
ARJONA: "I smell everything. When I was young, I wanted to be a perfumer. I would mix my mom's perfumes with my dad's and it didn't smell great. As I've grown up, I've always believed in having your own smell. I love [the scent of] orange blossoms. It smells fresh, vibrant, and clean, and coincidentally, My Way has it."
ALLURE: How do you like to apply your perfume?
ARJONA: "I spray [fragrance] on my wrist and gently dab it right under my ears. When you say hello to someone, it's there, but not in their face."
ALLURE: How do you exemplify strength in your life?
ARJONA: "I always go back to my experiences. I think of every obstacle that I've been able to surpass in my life. I [am] fearless and not afraid of failure. Even if you fail, you get back up knowing you will [be] stronger. It's one of my favorite things about getting older. I'm realizing how powerful and how strong I can be."
