Adidas wants Colin Kaepernick if he makes it on an NFL roster
Quarterback Colin Kaepernick still doesn’t have a team willing to sign him for the upcoming season. He is, though, still drawing sponsorship interest.
Mark King, the president of Adidas’ North America division, told the Arizona Republic on Friday that the company wants to sign Kaepernick to an endorsement deal — but only if he makes it on a NFL roster.
“If he signs on a team, we would definitely want him,” King said.
So far, though, no team has indicated that they’re willing to sign Kaepernick. The Seattle Seahawks cancelled a planned workout with Kaepernick last week after he wouldn’t promise to not kneel for the national anthem, and instead signed Stephen Morris. Morris has been in the NFL since 2014, but has never appeared in a game.
King said Kaepernick’s activism isn’t an issue for Adidas. They aren’t in the “business of activism,” he said, but that it’s important to allow their athletes to tell their stories.
“We love athletes that have a platform to make the world a better place,” King told the Arizona Republic. “If they’re an activist in a way that brings attention to something that moves the world forward, even if there’s controversy at that moment, we’re really interested in those athletes because I think it represents the world today.”
