Presenter, DJ and former Big Brother contestant, Adele Roberts, has bravely shared her bowel cancer diagnosis on social media with the hope of encouraging others to get any unusual symptoms checked by a doctor.

Alongside a selfie showing her in a hospital gown, Adele, who is 42-years-old, wrote to her 133,000 followers on Instagram explaining that she had been experiencing problems with her digestion for some time, but initially thought it was nothing to be worried about.

She also shared an infographic of symptoms associated with bowel cancer, such as changes in bowel habits, bleeding from your bottom or noticing blood in your poo, and unexplained tiredness.

"Thanks to a conversation I had with my Dad a few years back I went to my GP for a check up," Adele shared, adding that at first she was embarrassed. "I’ll be honest, I was embarrassed but I also knew that it could be something serious. So I went just in case. I didn’t think anything of it at first and just assumed it might be food sensitivity.

"After a few phone calls I was sent for some examinations and checks. I was then diagnosed with bowel cancer. This was at the start of the month."

Adele continued on to say that everything has progressed "so quickly" (in terms of her treatment plan) and that she is now keen to speak out in order to help others, sharing a vital reminder that "cancer doesn't discriminate".

"PLEASE make sure you get checked out if you have ANY concerns," she wrote. "The sooner you’re able to see your GP or talk to someone the sooner you can get help. If I hadn’t I might not be so lucky. As I’ve learned over the last few weeks, there’s no ‘normal’ with cancer. Sadly it can affect anyone, at any age, anytime. It doesn’t discriminate. Early detection can save your life."

The post also detailed how Adele is due to have surgery today to hopefully remove the tumour and will know more about the next steps, and whether or not the cancer has spread.

"So far the outlook is positive and I feel so lucky that I can be treated. It’s just the start of my journey but I’m going to give it everything I’ve got," she added.

Many of Adele's BBC Radio colleagues shared their messages of support in the comments section of her post, with Mollie King writing, "Sending you so much love Adele! ❤️❤️❤️"

Clara Amfo added, "Love you so much 💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛" and Scott Mills wrote, "We all love you Adele. Its amazing you posted this. You’re awesome and you’ve GOT this 😊❤️❤️"

We're sending Adele our very best wishes and hopes for a full and fast recovery.
