After a 4 and a half year hiatus, Adele is finally returning to SNL. The show announced the news on Sunday after the airing of the third episode of its 46th season. She'll be hosting SNL alongside musical guest H.E.R. Adele quickly followed up the news with an announcement of her own, taking to Instagram to express her excitement.

Bloooooody hellllll I’m so excited about this!! And also absolutely terrified! My first ever hosting gig and for SNL of all things!!!! I’ve always wanted to do it as a stand alone moment, so that I could roll up my sleeves and fully throw myself into it, but the time has never been right. But if there was ever a time for any of us to jump head first into the deep end with our eyes closed and hope for the best it’s 2020 right? Itll be almost 12 years to the day that I first appeared on the show, during an election...which went on to break my career in America, so it feels full circle and I just couldn’t possibly say no! I am besides myself that H.E.R will be the musical guest!! I love her SO much I can’t wait to melt into a flaming hot mess when she performs, then confuse myself while I laugh my arse off in between it all.
See you next week ♥️🤞🏻

Adele last appeared on SNL in 2015, shortly after releasing her third album 25. At the time, her single "Hello" was dominating the airwaves and shattering records. It was her 4th single to debut at no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also the first song to sell 1 million downloads in a week.

The cast poked fun at the song's ubiquity in a popular digital short about a family fighting at Thanksgiving dinner. As soon as anyone turned on "Hello" the fighting stopped and the scene faded to the "Hello" video's signature sepia tones. Everyone from host Matthew McConaughey to castmember Jay Pharoah, capitvated by the music, began belting out the song and morphing into the singer herself. All the sudden Beck Bennett had Adele-like painted fingernails. Aidy Bryant's stuffy holiday sweater was repalced with Adele's luxurious fur coat. McConaughey's eyelashes doubled in size and his eyelids featured Adele's famous wing-tipped look.

The video was a cheeky commentary on Adele's ability to dominate conversation everytime she does something—a trend that has kept up despite the fact that she hasn't released any new music in four years. Adele's the kind of mega-star who breaks the internet simply by logging on, and when you have that much influence, every single Instagram post is an open invitation for scrutiny. Recently, Adele has faced undue amounts of commentary about her weight and has also been accused of cultural appropriation.

Next week's episode of SNL will give Adele an opportunity to either address all of that press or ignore it. People will have feedback no matter what she does. But for all that noise, Adele's music is an effective cure, and perhaps the SNL gig means more of it is on the way soon.
