Adam Driver played the complex villain of the revived Star Wars universe for three movies, culminating in a dramatic exit which proved both satisfying and problematic, depending on which fans you ask.
In a new featurette included on the home release of the movie, Eunice Huthart reveals that Driver actually performed all of his own stunts during Kylo Ren's highly memorable (and meme-able) fight scenes.
"There was no ice-breaking with Adam," says Huthart of the famously intense actor. "I actually love it, I love it. Even in rehearsals, Adam's in character. I'd go 'Adam, you need to step out more, it's closing your strength down', and he's like 'no, I don't need to step out more, Kylo Ren wouldn't be like that, he wants it there'... and we'd have this argument, but I like it."
"He's like, 'so this is how it is, Eunice, I do all my own stunts,'" she continues. "I'm like, 'here we go, I always hear this.' I go, 'Adam, there's a level you can do and there's a level you can't.' 'No, no, no, you're not hearing me. I do it all'... So I was like, 'OK, if it looks good you can do it, if it doesn't look that good, I'll be putting a stunt guy in. It has to look good. But he did everything!"
In the video, Driver comments how his connection to the character motivated him to want to master the many physical demands of the movie, and how working with Huthart helped him unlock his full potential as an action performer.
"Eunice has a confidence that is really exciting to work with," says Driver. "She's ferocious in a way that you want people to be, and when you have people like that, then you trust their opinion, and it challenges you to make it better and more specific... The physicality of Kylo, I'm very protective over, so I wanted to do all of the things. Character is her starting place; it's never from spectacle, it's always from within."
