The Ad Astra Trailer Teases an Awesome Space Mystery

Brad Pitt shoots for the moon in the upcoming sci-fi thriller.

Even after watching the latest trailer for Brad Pitt's mystery space movie Ad Astra, I still don't have a firm grasp on what this film is going to be about, and that's just the way I like it. Ad Astra looks stacked with amazing space imagery and confounding sci-fi mysteries, and that's just the way I like it. Check it out:

Ad Astra, according to a summary, "follows an astronaut [Pitt] who goes into space in search of his long-lost father [Tommy Lee Jones], whose experiment threatens the solar system." Awesome! I don't need to hear any more about the thing. One ticket to Ad Astra, please. You have convinced me.

The film is co-written and directed by James Gray, a criminally underrated filmmaker responsible for modern cult classics like Two Lovers and The Lost City of Z. Whether Ad Astra will, with its star power and genre appeal, propel him into full mainstream recognition remains to be seen, but this easily looks like his most ambitious film yet, mixing some impressive interstellar exploration with some really wacky-looking twists. Gray has vowed to show "the most realistic depiction of space travel that's been put in a movie." All this alongside a score by Max Richter, who messed with my emotions like they were a ball of Play-Doh throughout The Leftovers' three seasons? I can't wait.

Ruth Negga, Liv Tyler, and Donald Sutherland co-star in the film alongside Pitt and Jones. It'll be released on September 20.
