“Business is boomin’—or should I say ‘bloomin’’?” says Hilton Carter, 43, the online plant expert known for his infectious joy and charm. From his Baltimore home, decorated with lush and sculptural greenery, Carter shares inspiration and advice on how to maintain thriving plants. Rather than more ficus mania, he insists that “variegated and rare plants” are on the rise. “You won’t see as much of the ‘bring it all in’ sort of plant styling, but more purposeful planting.”

As you scroll through Carter’s Instagram, you’ll find yourself enamored by his playful banter and many plant rants. His experience as a filmmaker shines through—but it's his expertise that keeps followers around. From myths about succulents to insightful plant care tips, his wisdom is a plant parents’ dream. “I don’t have a memory of gardening but I do remember as a 5-year-old loving to visit the local conservatory, filled with tropical plants,” Carter shares.

This childhood curiosity grew into a side hustle in 2016, when he began sharing his love for interior design and plants as a way to balance out his day job at an ad agency. His followers began to send him questions about their struggling plants, and, soon enough, a career flourished. Carter is the author of three books (his fourth comes out March 28th) that capture the beauty of wild interiors, plant care, and pages upon pages of inspiration. He also owns a plant nursery and cafe, Green Neighbor Shop. With a seasoned thumb and great eye, Carter is planning for a brighter (and greener) future online and within your home.

Q & A

House Beautiful: What’s your best tip for getting started with houseplants if you haven’t had luck in the past?

Hilton Carter: The best thing to do is take note of the quality of light that is coming into your space and only bring plants into that room that can thrive in that light. It starts there. Then do all the research on those plants so that you know when it requires water, repotting, etc.
