According to Celebrities, Opera Gloves Are Casual Now
The opera glove, at this point, has a bit of a misnomer. As of late, celebrities and luxury brands have propositioned the prim above-the-elbow accessory as an anywhere and everywhere-type of garment.
When I interviewed the designer Romeo Hunte during New York Fashion Week not too long ago, he wore a velvet pair paired with an oversized tee in the middle of a party full of blaring hip hop. Other considered and effective bastardizations of the fancywear have taken place too. For the 2022 Met Gala, actor Kodi Smit-McPhee wore a red latex pair with a crisp button-down and stiff denim trousers (crafted in Bottega Veneta’s endlessly delightful trompe l'oeil leather). And when I scroll through my Instagram feed lately, I’ve noticed more than a few models and influencers wearing opera gloves during a night out on town. It’s the perfect dose of chic meets debauchery.
The unlikely rise of the opera glove highlights how even the most traditionally stuffy and formal flourishes can receive social-media-friendly casualwear adaptations. Take, for example, model Gigi Hadid. The Netflix star recently appeared on Good Morning America wearing a knit sweater that coordinated with her knit opera gloves (both by Valentino), serving up the perfect proposition of playful but elegant. Or one could look to model Irina Shayk, who anchored an otherwise loose silhouette with a pair of skin-tight velvet gloves worn underneath a baggy tee.
Personally, I’m obsessed with how menswear designers are increasingly utilizing opera gloves—traditionally associated with womenswear—to add a modern touch of softness and femininity to an outfit. See: Kim Jones’s strong spring 2020 collection for Dior Men’s, which featured lace opera gloves worn underneath pastel-hued suits. But the most recent bout of collections suggests the trend is kicking into high-gear. Luar provided American Psycho vibes with his litany of leather opera gloves worn under corporate pinstriped suits. Rick Owens also delivered rugged takes on the opera gloves, which he crafted with beat-up and worn leather for his fall 2023 collection. And I think we can all take great inspiration from Kendall Jenner, who donned a pair of animal-print gloves with coordinated intimate wear. Lesson learned: opera gloves are not just for a night out now, but also a night in.
