Class, it's time for school to get back to session. Abbott Elementary quickly became ABC's runaway hit when it debuted late last year, and it seems like everyone fell in love with the dysfunctional teachers at the Philadelphia elementary school. The mockumentary sitcom was so well received, Rotten Tomatoes currently rates it as "98% Fresh" rating, which is "a special distinction awarded to the best-reviewed movies and TV shows." Given how many TV shows there are available to stream these days, it's a true achievement.

But that's not all. Abbott Elementary also recently picked up three wins at the 2022 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series and Best Actress in a Comedy Series, both for Quinta Brunson. Fellow cast member Sheryl Lee Ralph won for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, a historic moment as she became the second Black woman ever to win in the category.

In light of the news, the show applauded the major TV success on social media. "THIS is the moment," Abbott Elementary's official Twitter wrote."Congratulations to #AbbottElementary for winning 3 #Emmys! We'll never stop celebrating this honor."

While the ABC sitcom continues riding the school bus to success, many fans are asking about Abbott Elementary season 2. Luckily, we paid attention in class, and we have some answers for you. Here's everything we know about the second season of Abbott Elementary:

Is there going to be a season 2 of Abbott Elementary? When is the Abbott Elementary season 2 release date?

Season 2 of Abbott Elementary will premiere on September 21 at 9 p.m. ET on ABC. The show received its renewal news back in March and a 22-episode order later in the summer. In typical Principal Coleman (Janelle James) fashion, the show made the big announcement straight from her desk to social media.

There are a lot of questions after the season 1 finale that still need answers. Now that Janine is single, is she finally going to give her heart to Gregory (Tyler James Williams)? Speaking of Gregory, how will he fare as a full-time school teacher while balancing a relationship with Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph)'s daughter? Will we see more of Jacob (Chris Perfetti)'s relationship with Zach any time soon? And we need to find out whether Melissa (Lisa Ann Walter) ended up going out with the vending machine guy!

Needless to say, we're ready for school to start very soon. What's more, ABC released the first look at the new season. The minute-long clip gives folks a taste of the hilarious shenanigans the Abbott crew will definitely be getting up to in the upcoming episodes.

Most recently, the official trailer was shared featuring some clues of what fans can expect in Abbott Elementary season 2. Between Gregory trying to step up his teaching game, Melissa not taking the news of her class expanding well and Principal Coleman back to her usual tricks, the Abbott crew will definitely be getting up to funny antics in the upcoming episodes.

Which cast members will be in season 2 of Abbott Elementary?

We've done our homework, here's an idea of which cast members we can expect to see return for season 2:

  • Quinta Brunson as Janine Teagues, the bubbly second-grade teacher who's single for the first time in her life

  • Janelle James as Ava Coleman, the unqualified yet relatable principal

  • Tyler James Williams as Gregory Eddie, the substitute first-grade teachers who's now a full-time staff member

  • Lisa Ann Walter as Melissa Schemmenti, a second-grade teacher who is all bark and maybe a little bite

  • Chris Perfetti as Jacob Hill, the history teacher who just wants an in with the rest of the teachers

  • Sheryl Lee Ralph as Barbara Howard, a kindergarten teacher whom Janine aspires to be

  • William Stanford Davis as Mr. Johnson, a curmudgeon janitor who has a colorful past

In an official announcement from the show's Instagram, actor William Stanford Davis was promoted to series regular for season 2.

"Private investigator, pipe fitter, bunting coach, custodian, oh and #AbbottElementary SERIES REGULAR," the sitcom captioned the post in July. "Come on, y'all, let's celebrate Mr. Johnson in the comments 👇🎉 @thewilliamstanforddavis."

Fans were thrilled about this recent update, and they quickly shared their excitement on social media. "I always look forward to seeing his character 😂😭 ! The janitor is the best!" one follower wrote in the comments section. "Yay! He is absolutely fabulous and I’m so glad we are getting more of him next season. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽," another added. And one more is ready for more zingers from Abbott Elementary's favorite janitor: "Yes!!!! His one liners are pure gold 🔥🔥🔥."

Do we know what season 2 of Abbott Elementary will be about?

We can't cheat and give you all the answers! But in a June interview with Deadline, Quinta did reveal her hopes on what fans could expect come September.

"I think one thing that’s exciting to me is for the first season, I really wanted the characters to stay in the school for the most part," she noted to the outlet. "I think we leave maybe three times, to go to a nail salon, to go to the zoo. And that was on purpose, I just wanted the audience to fall in love with our school and they did and it worked and I’m so happy. So, this season, now we get to go maybe to some of the character’s houses, go out with them at night and stuff like that."

It looks like Quinta's not the only one with big plans for next season. In an April interview with Elle, the cast gave their thoughts on where their characters can go at Abbott Elementary. Here's what they said:

Brunson wants to take more field trips, literally and figuratively, outside of the Abbott Elementary halls; Ralph wants Barbara to start a choir in the vein of Sister Act 2 Walter wants the crew to travel to a teaching convention, except “they can’t afford an expensive one, so it’s, like, Atlantic City.” Williams hopes for more will-they, won't-they romance from Gregory and Janine: “[Gregory’s] got to grow a lot before he’s ready for a relationship, period, let alone with Janine. However, we can see, from the outside point of view, how if they do the work, they could really have something special.”

In that same vein, TVLine's Matt Inside Line reported that viewers will meet the teacher's friends and relatives outside of school hours. According to Abbott Elementary executive producer Justin Halpern, this means new familiar faces. "We do have some special guest stars that I think will surprise people, specifically in the premiere," he told the outlet.
