By Sarah Hansman

Ever since 1979, my two favorite men, Ben and Jerry, have been cranking out the world’s creamiest ice cream with the most unique mix-ins and the most creative names.

From cult classic favorites like Cherry Garcia, to their line of refreshing frozen yogurt, to their newer, more outlandish flavors like The Tonight Show Dough and the cookie core series, there is a choice for everybody. However, this can be problematic when you end up spending more time deciding what flavor to get than eating.

April 14th is non-negotiably the best day of the year for all my fellow ice cream lovers. Three words: Free Cone Day. You heard me, Ben & Jerry’s will be handing out FREE ice cream in Scoop Shops everywhere.

But the question remains, what flavor should you get?

Well, don’t worry, because the Spoon University team here at Boston College put on our eating pants and made the task a lot easier for you. After testing out flavor after flavor after flavor (and landing ourselves into a subsequent food coma), we developed a definitive ranking. So, which flavors proved supreme and which fell flat?

10. Coffee Toffee

Strictly for lovers of coffee AND toffee. The coffee will be sure to get you up and moving in the morning. However, the toffee was a little overpowering and hard to chew, landing this flavor in last place.

What’s in it: Coffee ice cream with fudge-covered toffee bar pieces.

9. Karamel Sutra Core

image

Part of B&J’s new core series. Karamel Sutra was oozing caramel from every crack. Our tasters thought the core was too concentrated. We wish the caramel was swirled through for even spoonfuls.

What’s in it: Chocolate and caramel ice creams with fudge chips and a soft caramel core.

8. Mint Cookie Chip

A beautiful marriage of mint ice cream and cookies n’ cream. Well done Ben. Well done Jerry.

What’s in it: Peppermint ice cream with chocolate sandwich cookies.

7. Chunky Monkey

image

Chunky Monkey is the real MVP if you are a banana lover. The chunk-o-meter is about to break with huge pieces of fudge and crunchy walnuts. However, if you aren’t too fond of bananas, steer clear, because the creamy yet fruity flavor packs a punch.

What’s in it: Banana ice cream with fudge chunks & walnuts.

6. Peanut Butter Cup

image

This flavor took us to peanut butter heaven and back again. The ice cream was so rich and Ben & Jerry does not skimp on the peanut butter cups. If you can’t handle the intensity of the Peanut Butter Cookie Core, but you are still a peanut butter lover, you NEED this in your life.

What’s in it: Peanut butter ice cream with peanut butter cups.

5. Cherry Garcia

image

An oldie but a goodie. Cherry Garcia is probably your parents top pick and for a good reason. The combination of chewy cherry pieces and fudge chunks has kept this flavor around since its introduction in 1987 and has simultaneously made it a cult favorite.

What’s in it: Cherry ice cream with cherries and fudge flakes.

4. Half Baked

image

Half Baked beats regular the cookie dough ice cream 9 times out of 10 because not only does it have giant globs of cookie dough, but it also has fudgey chunks brownie bits. Double the dough = double the goodness.

What’s in it: Chocolate and vanilla ice creams with fudge brownies and gobs of chocolate chip cookie dough.

3. Peanut Buttah Cookie Core

image

Step aside Peanut Butter Cup; this cookie core is for hard-core peanut butter lovers only. In this pint, you can find Peanut butter in FOUR different forms, each one better than the last.

What’s in it: Peanut butter ice cream with crunchy peanut butter sugar bits, peanut butter cookies, and a peanut butter cookie core.

2. The Tonight Dough

Jimmy Fallon strikes again. With two types of ice cream and two types of cookie dough, The Tonight Dough packs everything you want in an ice cream in each bite.

What’s in it: Caramel and chocolate ice creams with chocolate cookie swirls and gobs of chocolate chip cookie dough and peanut butter cookie dough

1. Phish Food

Phish Food was the first tub emptied and the clear winner. The combination of classic chocolate ice cream with gooey marshmallow is so right in so many ways. As a fan favorite, I can say with ultimate confidence that it lives up to the hype.

What’s in it: Chocolate ice cream with gooey marshmallow swirls, caramel swirls, and fudge fish.
