8 Spas to Seek Out in the New Year

For all the merriment in the air, the holidays can take a lot out of you—mentally, physically, emotionally. To speed healing, and keep your body in fighting shape for the year ahead, consider seeking out a restful, restorative spa treatment. Fortunately, the wellness offerings couldn’t be more varied right now. Whether you want to sculpt your facial muscles with firming physiotherapy, stretch your limbs with watsu massage or energize your entire body in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, these newly opened—and soon-to-open—spots combine ancient, holistic wisdom with modern, high-tech touches to deliver a total-body tune-up. Here’s to starting 2020 with a calm, clear head and skin to match.

Shou Sugi Ban House, New York

For a slow-beauty-style Hamptons retreat, head to Shou Sugi Ban House in Water Mill, N.Y., an intimate, Japanese-inspired ryokan (or inn) set on three pastoral acres designed by landscape architect Lily Kwong. Itineraries are entirely customized and might include craniosacral massages to break up fascia and align your spine, skin-firming micropuncture facials or ceremonial-like body treatments: The Roots Unbound, for example, starts with a frankincense-, hyssop- and ginger-infused massage to boost immunity and finishes with a fresh serving of digestive bitters (and more plant-based delights await in the restaurant, which is overseen by Danish culinary wonder Mads Refslund).

Remedy Place, Los Angeles

The latest addition to the wellness club scene, Remedy Place is the go-to spot in Los Angeles to train your body, relax your mind and reboot your system with tailored health tonics (a dash of oregano for immunity, a bit of turmeric to ease inflammation...). Founded by chiropractor Jonathan Leary, D.C., Remedy offers monthly memberships, but non-members can book everything from rebalancing hyperbaric oxygen therapy to muscle-rejuvenating ice baths to vitamin-infused IV treatments. Just chilling in the interior is soothing, too—the setting subtly emits 7.83hz and 40hz sound frequencies to ground and energize the brain.

Miraval, Austin

Miraval’s newest location opened this year in Texas Hill Country. Tucked on 220 acres in a wildlife preserve, the resort hits all the high notes for mind, body and spirit wellness but with some extra only-in-Texas options: The two-part Wild Harvest Herbal Healer massage, for example, begins with cultivating herbs at the Cypress Creek farm, then moves into a farm-to-table body massage with plant oils distilled from the same fields. And cult botanical brand Laurel designed the Spiritual Warrior Facial, with gua-sha massage and floral elixirs to brighten, tone and prolong your outdoorsy glow.

The Spa at Equinox Hotel, New York

Trekking to Hudson Yards is getting more appealing by the minute now that The Spa at Equinox Hotel has opened, with a top-notch menu—star therapist Thuyen Nguyen is on call for muscle-sculpting physiotherapy face and body massages while in-demand New York dermatologist Dr. Macrene Alexiades curated a highly-potent, plant-based cellular regenerating facial. Also not to miss: The “wave table,” which taps into sound and harmonic resonance therapy to boost brain and energy flow and the private E.Scape pods, with views of the Hudson River where you can bask in collagen-stimulating LED light or rest on a gemstone healing mattress to ease sore muscles.

Arctic Bath, Lapland

With the rise in outdoor wellness experiences, Arctic Bath in Sweden’s Lapland region takes that concept to a new level. The open-air, six-cabin hotel and spa hovers on the Lule River, where it freezes into the ice in winter and peacefully floats on the surface in summer. Inspired by the practice of transporting felled trees down rivers, the sustainably-built, circular structure is lined with local pine wood and houses three saunas, hot and cold plunge pools and a treatment room, where you can book deep-tissue body fixes and lymphatic facials with tailor-made botanical creams and serums from Sweden’s own Kerstin Florian range. (And if you don’t have your sea legs, no worries—there are six cabins on land, too.)

Dior Spa Cheval Blanc, Paris

The latest Dior Spa outpost is set to open in late spring in the Cheval Blanc hotel, located in the first arrondissement near the Pont Neuf. The Peter Marino-designed space is modeled after a private apartment, and will feature six suites for bespoke treatments that utilize Dior’s science-backed skincare. Post-facial, you can relax in the other wellness areas, outfitted with a hammam, sauna and mosaic-tile-lined piscine, for aquatic workouts to offset the gastronomic delicacies served in the restaurant, run by Michelin-star chef Arnaud Donckele.

To experience the transformative benefits of Ayurvedic treatments firsthand, consider a trip to the epic Six Senses Fort Barwara, situated 68 miles southeast of Jaipur in India (the birthplace of Ayurveda medicine). Set to open next fall, the hotel is housed in a restored 14th-century fort once owned by the Rajasthani Royal Family. The 30,000-square-foot spa is located in the former women’s palace and includes a meditation temple, sauna and tepidarium (warm room), and an array of healing therapies, including Swedana (a traditional steam treatment), integrated sleep programs, and sunrise and sunset yoga to cap it off.
