These 8-Year-Old and 10-Year-Old Sisters Are Going Viral for Their Amazing Braiding Skills

Two young sisters, Aiyonnah and Jayonnah are going viral for their amazing box and feed-in braids. We spoke to their mother about their knack for braiding.

Every so often, we come across something so mind-blowing on social media it makes take a triple take in awe. The latest amazing viral moment? Two mesmerizing videos of 10-year-old Jayonnah and her 8-year-old sister, Aiyonnah, mastering two different braiding techniques with amazing skill and precision we'd usually see from professional hairstylists.

First came an original video of Jayonnah that was posted by her aunt on Twitter, showing her doing feed-in Lemonade-inspired braids, a skill many women twice her age struggle to master (myself included). In the short clip, you see that she even makes sure to take her time when she encounters a knot at the bottom of the braiding hair, so as not to yank at the person’s head. A skilled braider who’s also considerate — that’s a future successful, in-demand hairstylist in the making.

Just when people thought their edges were safe, a couple of hours later, another jaw-dropping video surfaced, this time of Aiyonnah doing box braids. Soon enough, the two sisters went viral, making rounds all around the Internet — even popular entertainment gossip page the Shade Room. And it’s easy to see why.

Since the girls were toddlers, their mother, Ashley, a professional hairstylist based in Southern California, would make them watch her as she braided her clients’ hair so they could eventually learn to do the same on their own. “They [saw] me braiding so much they just picked up on it,” Ashley explains to Allure. Of the two, Jayonnah first took a genuine interest in learning to braid before Aiyonnah, using her dolls for practice.

“Jayonnah started twisting her dolls’ hair at two years old and was braiding very quickly after that,” Ashley says. It soon paid off. By the time she turned four, she could seamlessly do a fishtail braid, something I personally can’t even do even if I tried. As for Aiyonnah, she started trying her hand at braiding at five years old. In no time, she nailed the basics on her own. “I just guided them to keep the braids smooth, nice and clean,” Ashley notes.

Fast forward a couple of years, the two have become Internet sensations. “They say they are famous," Ashley says, laughing. “They love reading all the positive comments. They’ve had a few people recognize them while we are out and instantly get excited,” she adds.

We don’t know about you, but we can’t wait for the day when we get our hair braided by these girls. In the meantime, watch them go on their dedicated Facebook page.
