Perhaps considered one of the actor’s most iconic roles, Willis played New York City police detective John McClane in the incredibly popular film series Die Hard. The series, which spanned nearly two decades, is based on the Roderick Thorp novel Nothing Lasts Forever.

For Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom, the actor took on the role of a local police captain named Captain Sharp. Here, he’s pictured with director Wes Anderson and co-star Jason Schwartzman. Anderson told Slate that working with the cast of Moonrise Kingdom was like working with family, and Willis’ “ideas about [his] character just sounded perfect to me.”

In 1992, Willis acted alongside Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep in Death Becomes Her, a satirical fantasy flick that tells the story of two rivals, played by Streep and Hawn, who try to win over the affection of Willis’ character. The movie hit number one during its opening weekend and was among the first films to use advanced computer-generated effects.
