When you’ve been raised on innerspring mattresses, the jump to the figure-hugging embrace of a full-foam mattress can be a leap too far. Hybrid mattresses form a great middle ground between that familiar feel and stability of innersprings, topped with layers of the latest developments in memory foam, cooling gel, and cushioning.

Ranging from firm to soft, hybrid mattresses have the added advantage of offering an excellent balance of support, comfort, and spine alignment for back, side, and stomach sleepers. This is great for people who move around the bed, as well as couples whose sleep patterns (and even size) are markedly different. The air pockets in the springs make them inherently breathable, and their solid construction and sag resistance make them inherently long-lasting. Plus, they’ve been proven to improve sleep quality.

Start shopping around, however, and it can be hard to tell your Zoned Support™ Align Foam & Gel Pods from your HeatDelete™ Bands and AirScape® Technologies. Our editors spent several weeks deciphering the jargon, as well as sleeping on and reviewing popular hybrid mattresses so you don’t have to. We measured each mattress's performance based on impacts on sleep quality, overall comfort in various sleep positions, alignment and support, and pain relief.

What to Know About Hybrid Mattresses

There are two main components to a hybrid mattress: the spring/coil core at the base and the comfort layer(s) of cushioning on top. Though there is some variation in the spring setup, basically, this layer provides a flat, even surface and offers some bounce—replacing the traditional box-spring foundation. This means a simple slatted base is all you need beneath most hybrid mattresses.

It’s the comfort layers up top where things get confusing. With any number of layers of polyurethane foams, gel-infused beads, latex, natural fibers, quilting and zoned support, it can be difficult to see the forest for the certified-organic-cotton-sourced-from-sustainably-harvested-trees. So, we’ll break down some of the basic jargon—from top to bottom—to get you started.

Common hybrid mattress terms:

  • Sleep surface/cover: The top layer of breathable fabric that touches your body.

  • Cooling gel: This refers to perforated memory foam that has gels, beads, even ceramic particles, embedded. The thermal qualities of this layer allow it to stay cool to the touch, even when a sleeper runs hot. Sometimes cooling gel is even quilted into the sleep surface, to be as close as possible to the heat source—you.

  • Memory foam: High-density polyurethane with “viscoelastic” (meaning slow response and high flexibility) qualities. Memory foam expands and compresses due to pressure from your body, conforming to your shape, then bouncing back again.

  • Zoned support: Areas of denser memory foam (or stiffer coils) offer more rigid support under high-pressure areas, like your hips and lower back, while lower gauge foam offers less resistance for areas like your knees and shoulders. Working in combination, these zones help keep your spine aligned while sleeping.

  • Pods, pockets, and slotted foams: Many hybrid mattresses incorporate textured layers of varying thicknesses and rigidity to give additional support or cushioning to specific areas.

  • Edge support: The rigidity of the edges might not be top of mind while choosing a new mattress, but firm edges make all the difference while getting into, and out of, bed. They also play a part in the structural integrity of the mattress over time, so look for models with solid edge support to prevent sinkage.

  • Accredited foams: There’s no hiding from the fact that most hybrid mattresses are topped with layers of plastic. So, if you plan on spending up to eight hours a night in close proximity, it pays to check any mattress you’re considering comes with CertiPUR-US® (or similar) accreditation. These foams have been independently tested for (and are free from) harmful chemicals and gasses—for you and the environment. For your added peace of mind, every mattress we recommend below is CertiPUR-US® certified.

Other Hybrid Mattress Considerations

Mira Tadros, DO, assistant professor of pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine, says it’s important to pick the right firmness to keep your spine aligned, and ideally, a mattress that will help keep you cool. “You want a mattress that will keep your spine neutral,” she says. “Compare it to your posture while standing straight—ideally, you want a mattress that will keep the same alignment.”

Dr. Tadros recommends firmer hybrid mattresses over plush or full-foam mattresses for people who sleep on their stomachs and backs, for heavier people, and for people prone to overheating. “With hybrid mattresses, the springs or the coils tend to provide more support,” she says. “Hybrid mattresses tend to be more durable than memory foam, and the presence of springs or coils makes hybrid mattresses more breathable, whereas memory foam can sometimes trap heat.”

Who It's Best For

The plush support was super comfortable in every sleep position, so it’s a great option for wrigglers and rollers.

Who Should Skip It

The firmness of this mattress won’t appeal to people looking for a hug-like embrace.

Why We Like It

Waking with fewer aches and pains, even after exercise, we found the Casper Wave Hybrid delivered a near perfect balance of comfort and support from the very first night. As we moved through the night, whether front, back, or side sleeping, this mattress cushioned and supported our hips and lower backs for pain-free restful sleep.

What It’s Made Of

From the cozy knit cover down to the airy spring base and edge support, every element of this mattress comes together to form an impressive whole. Cooling gel tops triple layers of breathable perforated foam, with three areas of zoned support to promote shoulder, hip, and spine alignment. Mid-mattress gel pods add rigidity under the waist and the spring layer adds lift and airflow.

How It Performed

Slightly firmer than we expected, this mattress alleviated hip and back pain while providing an unparalleled sleep experience night after night. We found we tossed and turned less, and woke feeling better rested than ever before—no aches or stiffness. The firm cushioning adapted to support our hips, shoulders, and spine, no matter the sleep position.

It’s Worth Noting

At a smidge under $3K for a Queen size, this is not a cheap mattress. And its firmness won’t be ideal for people who prefer a bit more “sink.”

Who It’s Best For

With exceptional support, this mattress conforms to your shape to ease aching backs.

Who Should Skip It

Some side sleepers may find this mattress too firm.

Why We Like It

The construction of this mattress makes for consistent support right up to the edges. We found that this mattress alleviated back pain while sleeping on our sides and back. Even at 20 weeks pregnant, and with a 13-month-old in tow, our editor experienced better quality sleep. And with no need for a box spring, this compact mattress is superbly supportive without too much springiness.

What It’s Made Of

Beneath the plush knit cover, a single layer of perforated foam conforms to your contours while delivering airflow. Another layer of memory foam offers zoned support, to relieve pressure on the shoulders and hips and help with spine alignment. The spring base adds airflow and lift, while the edge support keeps it all together for consistent cushioning side to side.

How It Performed

The Casper Original Hybrid hit that Goldilocks “just right” mid-point between soft and supportive, molding to our contours and conforming to our bodies in multiple sleep positions. The layers of foam provided great spine alignment, delivering a noticeable reduction in back pain. The solid construction stayed good as new throughout testing, and we felt it was great value at a mid-range price point.

It’s Worth Noting

A member of our team with a shoulder injury found this mattress too firm to alleviate pain while side sleeping.

Meet Our Tester
Our tester slept on a king size Casper Original Hybrid with a partner. Both tend to run hot at night, and our primary tester is a very light sleeper, but she tends to sleep well. She’s a combination sleeper, tending to switch between side, back, and stomach throughout the night.

Who It’s Best For

Anyone looking for big benefits on a budget.

Who Should Skip It

There aren't too many bells or whistles here, so if you’re after the latest NASA foam technologies, look further down the page.

Why We Like It

From night one, we found the balance of softness and rigidity perfect while back and side sleeping. We slept more soundly, woke less during the night and arose feeling refreshed each morning. Best of all, the plush yet medium-firm support delivered a big reduction in hip and back pain. All proving that budget mattresses can still offer huge benefits.

What It’s Made Of

With a thick layer of memory foam quilted into the knit cover, this mattress delivers contour-hugging cushioning right to the surface. More memory foam layers help align the spine. And six inches of high-quality springs offer a solid foundation for additional lift.

How It Performed

A nice middle ground between plush and firm, this mattress conformed to our contours to deliver a superb night’s sleep. While side sleeping we loved how the foam layers matched our form, allowing enough “sink” for the hips and shoulders to align our spines. This mattress looked and felt as good as new after several weeks of testing.

It’s Worth Noting

This is a budget mattress, so you’re not getting nearly the same level of multilayered technology that you get with the pricier options. That said, this slim mattress brought a range of benefits across every metric, making it our top pick for people on a budget.

Best Firm Hybrid Mattress: Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress

$1795 at Saatva.com

Type: Gel memory foam + coils

Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Split King, Cal King

Price Range: $995–$2,195

Firmness Level: Medium-firm (8/10)

Depth: 11.5 inches

Delivery: Free shipping + white glove delivery

Warranty and Return Policy: Lifetime warranty, 365-night trial

Who It’s Best For

Anyone who tends to carry tension—or needs additional pressure relief—will love this slightly firmer option.

Who Should Skip It

Stomach sleepers may find this a little too soft.

Why We Like It

Incredibly plush with very little “sink,” this mattress provided a perfect balance of softness and rigidity right out to the edges. The luxurious surface gives way to several wonderfully supportive memory foam layers that hug your contours for restful sleep in most positions. While the solid foundations and reinforced edges provide superb support. We slept more soundly than ever before, and woke feeling refreshed, with fewer aches and pains.

What It’s Made Of

From the ground up, the solid foundations, one inch of support core foam, and high-density foam rails underpin the multiple layers of comfort up top. The eight-inch individually wrapped coils absorb movement and reduce motion transfer. Air-pocketed memory foam gives breathability. Gel-infused memory foam draws away heat. And the top layers offer lumbar quilting for extra support in the middle of the mattress, and a hypoallergenic organic cotton sleep surface tops it all off.

How It Performed

There’s some serious technology in this mattress, and you can feel it from the first try. Our spines felt aligned regardless of sleep position. The edge support offered fantastic rigidity while we transitioned in and out of bed. Most importantly, after zero adjustment time, we slept more soundly, moved around less during the night, experienced no overheating, and woke feeling refreshed and pain free.

It’s Worth Noting

This is a large and heavy bed, and the optional foundations make it very tall—worth considering for people with mobility issues, or who live in small spaces.

Meet Our Tester
Our Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid tester is a combination sleeper, sleeping in all positions. She tested a king size mattress with a partner, who is also a combination sleeper. Both occasionally toss and turn throughout the night.

Best Hybrid Mattress for Back Sleepers: Lull Luxe Hybrid Mattress

$999 at Amazon.com

$1299 at Walmart.com

Type: Gel memory foam + coils

Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King

Price Range: $1,699–$2,399

Firmness Level: Medium-firm (5–7/10)

Depth: 13 inches

Delivery: Free shipping

Warranty and Return Policy: Lifetime warranty, 365-night trial, free returns

Who It’s Best For

True to its medium-firm label, this mattress perfectly balances cushioning and support.

Who Should Skip It

We experienced some shoulder soreness while side sleeping.

Why We Like It

Transitioning from a traditional coil mattress to the Lull Luxe Hybrid was easy—we felt instantly cradled in cloud-like softness. As a true medium-firm mattress, it felt supremely comfy and supportive while we were back and side sleeping, cushioning our contours and providing a great balance of softness and rigidity. While we noticed a significant reduction in back pain during testing, it’s worth noting that after side sleeping we still noticed some soreness from an existing shoulder complaint.

What It’s Made Of

Beneath the sleep surface, quilted with memory foam, there’s a cooling layer that incorporates gel beads to wick away heat. Then there’s a layer of responsive foam for spine alignment sitting above hundreds of pocket coils for even weight distribution and motion control. Extra firm foam around the perimeter and reinforced edges hold the whole thing in shape.

How It Performed

This medium-firm mattress offered great results across all our metrics, delivering a superb balance of comfort and support, along with a noticeable reduction in back pain. The solid core consisting of hundreds of individually wrapped coils adapted to our shapes, keeping our spines aligned as we moved. We did, however, notice a slight reduction in support over time, and while side sleeping we noticed no reduction in shoulder pain.

It’s Worth Noting

While we did see a big reduction in back pain while sleeping on this mattress, we saw no reduction in shoulder pain from a previous injury while we slept on our sides.

Best Cooling Hybrid Mattress: Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Mattress

$2937 at Amazon.com

See at Casper.com

Type: Hybrid foam, latex, cooling gel + springs

Sizes: Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King

Price Range: $2,895–$3,995

Firmness Level: Firm (9/10)

Depth: 13 inches

Delivery: Free shipping, estimated 3–11 business days

Warranty and Return Policy: 100-night trial, ten-year limited warranty

Who It’s Best For

All the cooling technology combined for a comfortable temperature all night will have hot sleepers resting soundly.

Who Should Skip It

This is a top of the line product, which comes with a high-end price tag, and will be out of reach for many.

Why We Like It

For those who like things firm and flat, we found this mattress consistently supportive and comfortable, with very little repositioning required. Whether lying on our backs, rolling, or moving, our spines felt perfectly aligned and our muscles instantly relaxed. We fell back to sleep quicker after waking, and we woke pain-free and refreshed. We also felt cooler in the night, with zero sweaty episodes thus far.

What It’s Made Of

Starting with a cool-to-the-touch sleep surface, the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow features a thin layer of cooling gel and what they call “HeatDelete™” bands, which direct heat out from the center of the mattress. Multiple layers of perforated memory foam keep the bed aerated and spines aligned. Gel pods under the waist add extra back support. Plus, a layer of springs adds even more airflow, durability, and lift.

How It Performed

The consistency of stability and support had us looking forward to going to bed, after years of suffering on a lumpy mattress. The cooling technologies worked wonders for hot sleepers (even with the cat cuddling close). And, while sleeping on our backs, the surface of this mattress didn’t bend, sag, or sink, providing a smooth, firm surface night after night.

It’s Worth Noting

The edge support is lacking, so this is not a great mattress if you’re after a flat platform for sitting. It’s also a very firm mattress, so not ideal for side sleepers or people who want something a bit more cuddly.

Best Hybrid Mattress for Combination Sleepers: Casper Nova Hybrid Mattress

See at Amazon.com

$2171 at Nordstrom.com

Type: Hybrid foam and springs

Sizes: Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King

Price Range: $1,795–$2,895

Firmness Level: Medium-soft

Depth: 12 inches

Delivery: Free shipping and in-home delivery and setup

Warranty and Return Policy: 100-night trial, 10-year limited warranty

Who It’s Best For

Softly supportive, with the perfect level of “sink” in the cushioning, we found this mattress adapted as we moved through multiple sleep positions.

Who Should Skip It

This is an expensive mattress, but if you can reach the price point, we recommend the investment.

Why We Like It

A balm for lower back pain, we could feel the layered support of this mattress meeting our pressure points through the night—whatever position we contorted ourselves into. Instantly, we experienced a massive reduction in back pain (which has lasted). And the improvement in our sleep patterns was way beyond expectations, with average nightly sleep totals of 6 to 8 hours blowing out to 12 on the very first night. We slept cooler, more deeply, and woke feeling energized.

What It’s Made Of

Like all the Casper mattresses we tried, the generous layering of the latest mattress technologies is impressive. There’s a layer of perforated foam up top, bolstered by a second layer that features three ergonomic zones—softer under the shoulders, and firmer under the waist. A slotted foam layer featuring seven support zones comes next, underpinned by a foundation of springs for extra lift, and wrapped in a firm border.

How It Performed

Honestly, we didn’t want to get out of this bed. After noticing a near-total reduction of back pain on night one, we literally overslept due to how comfy this mattress is. Whether on our backs, stomachs, or sides, the balance of comfort and support was superb, as the memory foams adjusted to counter our pressure points and leave us waking revitalized. We found this mattress seriously hard to fault, with perfect scores across almost all metrics we tested.

It’s Worth Noting

At over $2K for a queen size, this mattress is definitely an investment.

Best Medium Hybrid Mattress: SweetNight Twilight Mattress

$419 at Amazon.com

$310 at Walmart.com

Type: Hybrid foam and springs

Sizes: Full, Queen, King

Price Range: $700–$1,072

Firmness Level: Medium

Depth: 10 inches

Delivery: Free shipping

Warranty and Return Policy: 100-night trial, 10-year warranty, free returns

Who It’s Best For

This “pillow top” mattress brings together multiple foam layers atop a foundation of springs, for a softly supportive sleep experience.

Who Should Skip It

This is a great transition mattress if you’re coming off an innerspring, but it lacks the multilayered cloud-like cushioning of other mattresses we tried.

Why We Like It

Transitioning from a traditional mattress, it took a brief period of adjustment to feel any benefits from the SweetNight Hybrid Coil. But we learned to love the extra support provided, and in time experienced a big reduction in lower back pain. The multiple foam layers, bolstered by the core of tempered pocket springs, provided excellent support while sleeping on our sides and backs.

What It’s Made Of

The soft pillow top sits above two layers of cooling gel-infused foam and firmer transitional foam. The core consists of tempered steel pocketed coils for added airflow and stability.

How It Performed

This mattress is noticeably more rigid through the middle than the older mattresses we were used to. And though the rigidity was off-putting at first, as we adjusted to the feel we were able to fall asleep faster and felt marked improvements in sleep quality. We also experienced a large reduction in back pain. All in all, for the price, we rate this as a plush option for people not yet ready to take the plunge into (or don’t like the softness of) full-foam.

It’s Worth Noting

If you’re new to hybrid mattresses, the combination of the softness of the pillowtop and the firmness of the coils takes some getting used to. And the pillowy fabric up top may be too soft for some stomach sleepers.

Meet Our Tester
Our tester is a side and back sleeper who tested the SweetNight Hybrid Coil in a king size. She suffered from occasional back pain while sleeping on her previous mattress.

Our Testing Process

Before we started testing, we first spoke with board-certified physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) doctor Angelie Mascarinas, MD, to help develop our test methodology. We then interviewed several experts to help determine the characteristics to look for in top-rated mattresses. Our expert advisors include:

Mira Tadros, DO, Assistant Professor of Medicine (Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine) at the Icahn School of Medicine, Mount Sinai.

Theresa Marko, PT, DPT, MS, Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy, CEO & Owner of Marko Physical Therapy, Spokesperson for the American Physical Therapy Association Media Corps.

Karena Wu, PT, DPT, OCS, COMT, CSCS, CKTP, CPI, FAAOMPT, Physical Therapist, Owner of ActiveCare Physical Therapy in New York City and India.

Angelie Mascarinas, MD, Board-Certified Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) Doctor with fellowship training in interventional spine and musculoskeletal care, Hospital for Special Surgery NYC.

Our testing team comprised editors who experience varying levels of sleep disturbance due to injuries, workplace exertion, sleep conditions, and even young children. Once delivered to our editors’ homes, all mattresses were set up according to their instructions, compressed mattresses were expanded, and we recorded observations around ease of set up, odors, and time taken.

Our testing team then spent at least four weeks (and often several more) sleeping on their designated mattresses, making daily notes on sleep quality, night movement, partner disturbance, temperature levels, and energy upon waking. Our editors then collated their observations to give each mattress an overall rating out of five across key metrics such as ease of setup and use, improvement in sleep duration and restfulness, comfort, support, performance over time and value for money.

More Hybrid Mattresses to Consider

None of the mattresses below topped our categories during testing, but they still may be of interest to you.

Hybrid Premier 4 Mattress: The springy web-like fabric across the top gives this mattress a bumpy texture. And, unlike other mattresses we tried, it has a uniform “sink” rather than a feeling of zoned support. We did experience a marked improvement in sleep quality and a reduction in hip pain, though we’d recommend testing the feel of this mattress before purchasing.

Tuft + Needle Hybrid Mattress: While we did experience improved sleep quality over time on this mattress, we also woke with achy shoulders for the first week of testing. And though we found it comfortable and supportive while back and stomach sleeping, it felt too firm for side sleeping. Definitely one for people who prefer things at the firmer end of the spectrum.

Your Questions, Answered

What is a hybrid mattress?

Hybrid mattresses bring together foam layers above an innerspring core. This construction means you can get all the contour-hugging benefits of the latest memory foams, cooling gels and latex technologies in combination with the lift and stability of metal coils. For newcomers to foam mattresses or for people who enjoy the familiarity of a spring mattress, hybrids strike a great balance of cushioning and support.

Can you sleep on your side on a hybrid mattress?

Absolutely. Just be sure that your chosen mattress isn’t too firm. As Dr. Marko explains, “If you are a side sleeper, then you do not get good absorption and contouring of your hip and shoulder as they stick out into the bed if your bed is too hard.” Look to the softer mattresses (SweetNight Hybrid Coil and Casper Nova Hybrid) reviewed above for our best options for side sleepers.

Are hybrid mattresses good for back pain?

They can be, yes. Through testing, our editors felt a marked reduction in back pain while sleeping on these hybrid mattresses:

Generally speaking, firmer mattresses are better for individuals with low back pain. If mattresses are too soft, they will not provide the appropriate support needed for spinal alignment, and the body will sink into the mattress. However, it also depends on sleep positions and any medical issues. If a medical condition is a concern, always consult with a healthcare provider first.

Of the mattresses we tested, for back-pain relief, Dr. Wu recommends the:

How much do hybrid mattresses cost?

The hybrid mattresses that topped our categories varied in price from as little as $250, right up to $3799 (with larger sizes costing more). It’s worth noting that due to their innerspring plus layered foam construction, hybrid mattresses are generally more expensive than straight-up memory foam options. But they also deliver a more familiar feel for people who are new to foam mattresses. And, as Dr Tadros noted above, they tend to be more durable and last longer than full-foam models. The experts we consulted agreed that you can find good mattresses available for as little as $500 to $700.

How long do hybrid mattresses last?

The general consensus among the brands we tested: 8 to 10 years. This is considerably longer than spring mattresses (5 to 8 years), slightly longer than full-foam options, and significantly shorter than straight-up latex. So, again, hybrids are a great middle ground. Every mattress we recommend above comes with a ten-year or lifetime warranty—but, as always, the devil’s in the detail, so it pays to read the T&Cs before you purchase.
