From the start of her career, Demi Moore has been the indisputable poster girl for laid-back Hollywood style. She came onto the Hollywood scene in the late 1980s with the so-called Brat Pack and rose to fame with roles in cult classics such as Ghost, Indecent Proposal and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. Whether walking the red carpet or attending a royal wedding, Moore always adds a gothic touch to her famous bohemian style.

On her 58th birthday, we look back at Moore’s penchant for easy glamour on her own terms - from maxi coats, to sleek suits and polo shirts.

The polo shirt is a 1990s fashion staple, equivalent to today's logo tees. If you haven’t mastered the art of the French tuck, then this is where you can excel by going for a full tuck, or letting it hang loose. Avoid the sportsmanship connotations by pairing your polo with denim and belting it around the waist, which will create a soft hourglass shape, making it even more Moore.

Originally from the state of New Mexico, Moore still carries some Southwestern style in her everyday wardrobe: denim jeans, skinny belts and cowboy boots, the most integral piece. Moore takes these items and gives them a city twist by layering them with overshirts and swapping a denim shirt for a bold tee.

Wearing a maxi coat is like putting on a wizard's cloak - you decide what other elements of your outfit everyone sees, or doesn’t. You can also turn the coat into a dress by simply layering the lapels over each other and tying it - it’s easier to execute with neutral shades.

The sleek suit

A sleek suit is not the same style for every person - so you will need to try on several to find which works best for you. Unexpected shapes such as kimono blazers or gakuran, as Moore is wearing here are fun to experiment with for a change. It’s a no-fuss approach to formal dressing, but one which is far more interesting than the average.

Mixing and matching different fabrics and colours can also create a textural, interesting outfit. Moore’s approach to a bohemian aesthetic is subtle, she sticks to a particular colour palette, but will mix her plaids, fishnets and leather together.

Dungarees

Dungarees are practical, outdoorsy and great to wear in lockdown situations. In the winter it can be a great piece for layering under or over with roll necks and workwear jackets. For the summer, you can lose the layers and just wear with a T-shirt.

Mix and match

A typical fashion rule is that you should allow yourself two stand-out colours per outfit. However, you can get away with dressing more like a sophisticated Crayola packet, if you pick the right coloured crayons.

Don’t mix neutrals and monochromes with pastels and neons, as this will spotlight the fashion crime you have committed. Introducing prints can help take the edge off, for extra points, find a thread in the print that goes with the rest of your outfit. Demi’s checks in her yellow trousers are blue, which match to her jumper.

Wedding guest chic

For the wedding of Princess Eugenine, Moore took a leaf out of Amal Clooney’s wedding guest style book (remember that canary yellow dress by Stella McCartney?). Moore recreated that moment with her own burgundy red number from Stella McCartney, teamed with matching accessories from Malone Souliers and Gabriela Hearst.
