73 Questions With Dan Levy: Beyoncé, Blueberry Ricotta Pancakes, and Being an Introvert

Dan Levy is a simple man at heart; he likes woodsy scents, the blueberry ricotta pancakes from the café around the corner from his apartment, and his dog, Redmond. The Emmy-nominated Schitt’s Creek co-creator and star recently had Vogue over to answer a round of 73 Questions, perched on his couch (next to a peacefully sleeping Redmond, of course).

Levy wears a lot of hats on Schitt’s Creek, from creator to producer to showrunner to star. How is he still standing after all of that? “You might want to ask my therapist,” he deadpans. The Canadian-born star, who created Schitt’s Creek with his father, Eugene Levy, has some wise words to offer about fashion: “I think you have to feel comfortable in the clothes you’re wearing, because if you’re uncomfortable, people can see, and people can tell, and that’s not a good look.” Is there any trend he wouldn’t dare to try? “Hats.”

Levy proves adept at answering rapid-fire questions, but don’t ask him to rank all the Beyoncé albums: “Why would I ever do that? They’re all masterpieces.” (He won’t do Mariah Carey either, so don’t ask—and don’t even think about getting him to leak his extensive skincare routine.) As for prized possessions, Levy shows off his MTV Movie Award and his recently ordered breakfast with equal pride.

If you’re wondering about the creative process behind making a beloved family comedy, Levy likes to write late at night in his adorable writer’s nook; to fight off the insidious effects of writer’s block, he’ll either walk around the (literal) block or plan a trip. Fellow writer and 73 Questions participant Phoebe Waller-Bridge gets a nod here; she’s one of his favorite wordsmiths, along with the great Joan Didion. Despite his effusive charm, Levy describes himself as an introvert, and he’s not afraid to admit he drew on his father’s real-life personality to write for his unashamedly opinionated Schitt’s Creek character, David. Watch the full video for more, including Levy’s favorite designer, go-to pizza order, and the one thing he never fails to buy on his travels.
