Girl, 7, sets up lemonade stand to raise money to fight human trafficking: 'I want other kids to have a fresh start'
A 7-year-old girl in Indiana set up a lemonade stand with the goal of helping other girls escape from human trafficking — and the idea was all her own.
Kelsey, the young entrepreneur from Fort Wayne, Ind., was able to raise more than $400 by selling lemonade, Gatorade and water for $1 and donated her profits to Destiny Rescue. The Christian nonprofit organization has helped save 4,000 children from sexual exploitation around the world since 2011.
Kelsey, who set up her stand last Saturday, according to WPTA, was inspired because she "[has] a lot, and a lot of other kids don't have a lot. I want other kids to have a fresh start in the world."
She admitted that business started a bit slow.
"It made me feel, like, happy, but then it made me anxious," Kelsey said. "I'm like uh oh, is this my only customer?"
However, the customers soon started to pour in and Kelsey was able to raise a grand total of $472.04 to donate to the good cause.
"What she has done is awesome and it's from the heart" Kevin, Kelsey's father, told the station. "It's not something me or her mother asked her to do. This was all her idea ... to do."
Sandra Keller, the national director of events for Destiny Rescue, was equally impressed with Kelsey's kindness.
"It really resonated with me of what a young child was capable of doing all on her own," Keller said.
"[Donating] made me feel happy because I want other girls to feel the happiness that I feel," Kelsey explained.
