With COVID-19 restrictions putting a kibosh on indoor dining in many major US cities (including my very own New York) for the foreseeable future, it feels more important than ever to get our coat collections ready for parks and patios. (Unfortunately, I learned my lesson the hard way by wearing a light windbreaker to my last outdoor friend-date a few weeks ago, and I couldn’t feel my torso by the end of it.)

Don’t make the same mistake I did: It’s time to break out the big coats. And while it may sound silly, something is exciting (and, dare I say, empowering) about getting a new “power coat” you know you can throw on and instantly feel confident wearing. And while we definitely need other important wintertime essentials like hats, gloves, and scarves, everyone knows a good coat is the canvas that pulls the rest of the look together. It’s the real star of the show, as far as I’m concerned.

Either way, I’ve got you covered, literally, in case you need a push in the right direction. Find my favorite winter coat trends for 2021 below.

1. Faux-Fur Trim

Coats with faux fur, feathers and shearling trim are about to be everywhere. It’s the retro-inspired throwback trend you never knew you needed.

The contrast between the faux-patent leather and faux shearling trim is just too cool.

Experiment with a fun hue (like this incredible lavender) that’ll have you standing out against the dreary winter backdrops this season.

2. Leather Puffers

The puffer-coat trend has certainly already taken over, but may we suggest taking it a step further with chic, sleek leather iterations?

An all-black cropped silhouette says classic, cool and chic.

Speaking of classic and chic: This wear-with-everything brown hue feels different, yet très timeless.

3. Cute Quilting

Quilted coats have already recently become the quintessential toppers for It-girls everywhere — but more importantly, they’re just comfortable AF.

A classic quilted coat feels practical and effortless, always — especially in a neutral olive hue.

Embrace two trends at once with a quilted puffer in a baby-blue hue practically made for snowy winter getaways. Can’t you just picture yourself on the slopes (or hanging out at the ski lodge, if you’re like me) in this?

4. Moody Plaids

Everyone seems to be having plaid fever this season — especially when the pattern comes in dark hues and moody grays.

Shop: Torrid Grey Plaid Collar Sweater Coat, $58.17 (Orig. $89.50)

This one is lightweight enough for fall and spring days but has a thick, woven fabric and a knee-length hem and for ultimate warmth, too.

It’s on the pricier side, but this classic coat will get years of wear. Plus, the oversize, relaxed “dad-coat” silhouette is perfect for wearing over literally anything (including your chunkiest sweater).

5. Belted Teddy Coats

Shearling has been an outerwear essential for several seasons now, but “belted” silhouettes bring a new level of elegance and structure to an otherwise-ubiquitous look.

You’ll feel like an actual teddy bear with an oversize silhouette and cozy shawl collar.

It’s basically the robe you’ll never want to take off. So we won’t judge you if you wear this one around the house, too.

6. All the Fringe

Between shirt-jacket silhouettes and long, sophisticated dusters, get ready to see fringe-adorned outerwear everywhere this season.

Look for an ultra-luxe material like felt wool for ultimate warmth and coziness.

7. The Throwback Fleece

These are not the fleece jackets you wore in high school — but they’re just as functional and comfy.

You’ll be right on-trend with this street-style essential, perfect for throwing over sweats, jeans or leggings for errands and beyond.

Make a bold statement with a printed version that’ll get you all the compliments. (And it’s reversible, so you’re basically getting two jackets in one. Bingo.)
