I’ve always been a huge fan of a variety of music. My favorite songs are always the ones that teach a lesson or tell a story through the lyrics.

A few years ago, I lost a friend to cancer. I felt devastated but music helped me through. I think it’s important for us to all have playlists on hand, so I created this list of seven songs that are perfect for anyone experiencing grief.

    1. “What Hurts the Most” by Rascal Flatts

This song can help you heal when you still had so much to say to the person who passed away. What I love the most about this song is how it reminds me to forgive myself for not saying what I needed to say to my friend before they passed.

    2. “Tears in Heaven” by Eric Clapton

Related: Grieving the Loss of My Son 6 Years After He Died by Suicide

This Eric Clapton song perfectly describes the pain you experience when someone passes away at a young age. What I love most about “Tears in Heaven” is the reminder that everyone is happy in heaven.

    3. “I Drive Your Truck” by Lee Brice

Related: How I Plan to Celebrate the Second Year of Holidays Without My Son

In this song, Lee Brice describes what it feels like to lose a sibling. I also love how this song reminds us all that it’s OK to hold onto a loved one’s belongings for as long as you need to. After all, healing takes time and we all process grief in our own ways.

    4. “Broken” by Seether featuring Amy Lee

This song conveys the raw emotions of grief in a very beautiful way. When I listen to this song, I remember we all grieve in own unique ways.

    5. “When I Get to Where I’m Going” by Brad Paisley featuring Dolly Parton

This Brad Paisley song reminds us all that our loved ones are still watching over us, even after they’ve left this life.

     6. “One More Light” by Linkin Park

I don’t care who you are or what music you normally listen to — this is a great song about grief. It reminds us to live our final days to the very best of our abilities, even in the face of our struggles.

    7. “Don’t Take The Girl” by Tim McGraw

Tim McGraw’s “Don’t Take The Girl” is a beautiful song about losing a loved one. Sometimes we wish we could trade places with the person we lost so they could continue living on Earth. It’s a sweet sentiment, albeit unrealistic.

There are obviously many songs that could help you cope with a painful loss. Perhaps there’s a special song that reminds you of the person you lost. I love that music will never leave our side and will always hold a place in our hearts, no matter what life throws at us. Next time you experience an emotional loss, I hope you remember this playlist that helped me and you find comfort in the songs.
