The 7 Most Awkward Moments at the 2021 Golden Globes

From Cosmopolitan

Award shows like the Golden Globes are awkward in a normal year, and they're even worse when those awards shows are virtual, meaning that people are not just experiencing the typical "I have to make a speech on live TV" weirdness, but the "Did I unmute myself at the right time?" panic. Basically, it is a recipe for cringe-y moments. The Golden Globes did not disappoint in that area. Here are the most awkward moments from this year's ceremony.

Regina King's dog looking like it was going to poop on live TV.

I don't really know how to say this, but Regina King was doing her pre-show interview from her home, and there was a dog bed behind her. Suddenly, her dog was in the frame, and it walked to its bed and almost looked like it was going to poop. Regina didn't really notice because her back was turned, but it as truly an "Uh oh, oh no, OH NO," moment.

Daniel Kaluuya's feed cutting out during his acceptance speech.

Daniel was the first winner of the night, woo! But when they went to him so he could make his acceptance speech, no one could hear him. When they finally fixed it, he recovered hilariously, saying, ""You did me dirty! Am I on? Is this on? Can you hear me now?"

Catherine O'Hara's acceptance speech.

When Catherine won her award for her performance in Schitt's Creek, she tried to make a joke about getting played off the stage like people do when they get the music as a cue to wrap up their speech, but there were already some tech issues, which made it weird.

Tracy Morgan pronouncing "Soul" like "Sowl."

So Tracy was in charge of announcing the best score category, and the winner was the movie Soul. But for whatever reason, maybe because it's been the longest year on record, he pronounced "Soul" like "Sowl." He realized it as soon as he did it and went to the recording of the winner's acceptance speech before he could correct it.

Jason Sudeikis attending in whatever physical state he attended in.

Jason was nominated for Ted Lasso, and he won! But he did not, in any way, look prepared to win. Like, his speech was pretty confusing, but it was still funny, because he's Jason Sudeikis. We love him regardless. In fairness to him, he was coming live from London, and it was, like, 2 a.m. there.

The HFPA choosing to highlight the movie Music.

It was sketchy when the Golden Globes nominated Music, a movie directed by Sia and starring Kate Hudson that was panned by critics and advocates for its terrible representation of the autism spectrum (including casting Maddie Ziegler as a young girl on the spectrum). Not only did the Globes nominate the movie, but they gave it one of those "here's one of the movies" spotlight slots at the show, with Kate Hudson intro'ing the film. Not cute!!

Every single tech issue...

I will give it to the Globes that, overall, they pulled off a virtual awards ceremony pretty well. But, you know, we've all spent the last year on Zoom, so we know that even the best laid plans go awry.
