From Cosmopolitan

There’s nothing like having a sister, am I right? And, no, I'm not talking about the ones you pledged your loyalties to in college—I mean the ones who chew you out for stealing their vintage slip dress one minute, and then send you a dumb tweet the next. That’s the thing about sisters—the bond is unmatched and basically unbreakable. It’s kind of like having a built-in best friend (except this one isn’t afraid to tell you that the person you’re seeing is trash). They’re probably one of the very few people that truly get you.

I mean, our sisters teach us so much—and that definitely includes lessons in beauty. No matter how much you fight, at least you know that your sister won't have you out here looking like a hot mess. So, in honor of Cosmo’s first ever Sisters issue (I’ve grabbed a copy, have you?), I reached out to seven sister squads to chat about what they’ve learned, beauty-wise, from their kin. Be sure take notes.

1. Devon Lee and Sydney Carlson

Since launching Wildflower Cases in 2012, sisters Devon Lee and Sydney Carlson are conquering the internet—one mirror selfie at a time. The cheeky and playful designs, ranging from a pair of baby cherubs to pink flames, are a social media staple. (Full disclosure: I have the hot-pink leopard phone case, and it's a main character in my IG stories.) The only thing cooler than the cases are the 20-something sisters themselves.

Cosmo: Where are you two currently quarantining?

Sydney: I'm at my new home in LA with my roomie Olivia.

Devon: I'm in LA!

What's one thing about beauty you've learned from your sister?

Sydney: Dev has always been the queen of the natural glow-y look. She’s taught me so much about products that really just make your skin glow. She got me hooked on the Westman Atelier Foundation stick—it’s the best.

Devon: Sydney’s always inspired me to experiment with makeup, she’s always trying new looks and I’m always looking to her as a muse.

2. Chloe and Halle

Chloe x Halle, the R&B duo, have been everywhere lately (including, ahem, our October cover). Seriously, though—you can’t scroll through IG or Twitter without someone mentioning them. I mean, it makes sense. Ever since getting the Beyoncé co-sign (they’re repped by her label, Parkwood Entertainment), they’ve effortlessly navigated the realms of TV, fashion, and of course, music (their latest album, Ungodly Hour, was released in June 2020).

Cosmo: Where are you two currently quarantining?

Chloe x Halle: We're in LA, at home with our family.

What's one thing about beauty you've learned from your sister?

Chloe: That less is more! I always love seeing my sister's natural glow shine through minimal makeup.

Halle: We've both shown each other how beautiful it is to truly be ourselves.

3. Danielle and Chantelle Dwomoh-Piper

What’s that saying about New Yorkers and wearing all black? Couldn’t be further from the truth when it comes to twins Chantelle and Danielle. With a mother from Montserrat, an island in the Caribbean, and a father from Ghana, the multi-hyphenate sisters (as in models-bloggers-designers) look to their roots for inspo when it comes to mixing prints and sporting bold hues. It's no wonder they’ve amassed such a following—how could anyone ever look away?

Cosmo: Where are you two currently quarantining?

Danielle and Chantelle: We're in New York City.

What's one thing about beauty you've learned from your sister?

Danielle: Getting to know your skin type and understanding what products work for you is very important. And use moisturizer no matter what.

Chantelle: Sunscreen is a must and never go to bed with makeup on.

4. Huda, Mona, and Alya Kattan

Meet the First Family of Beauty—Huda, Mona, and Alya Kattan. While you’ve definitely heard of Huda (she’s in that realm of celebrity where she’s recognizable by her first name alone), the Huda Beauty empire might not even exist if it wasn’t for the support of Mona and Alya. Together, the three women have grown the blog to a beauty brand (covering cosmetics, body, tools, and more), a fragrance collection, Kayali, and a skicnare line, Wishful. Thankfully, all three lines are packed with products that actually work IRL and look really good on IG.

Cosmo: Where are you all currently quarantining?

Huda: My husband, daughter and I just moved into a new home on the Palm in Dubai. Alya and Mona live a few doors down! We’re loving being this close to Alya and Mona through everything!

What's one thing about beauty that you've learned from your sisters?

Huda: Huda Beauty wouldn’t be what it is today without my sisters. I started my blog and created content doing what I love to do on my own, but it wasn’t until I had the support from my sisters that everything began to take off. I started selling my custom false lashes because Mona convinced me it was the right thing to do. Then, Alya offered me $6,000 to start producing more lashes hoping that the business would grow and the rest is history.

Mona: Huda has always loved to do my makeup! When we were little girls she would experiment with makeup on my face, almost like I was her little doll. As we got older, she also became instrumental in helping me figure out how to tame my eyebrows. We went through some ups and downs with the trends, but ultimately I learned a lot of grooming tricks from her! Now, many years later, we have taken all those beauty learning and secrets, and turned them into the Huda Beauty business that we run together with our older sister, Alya. We’ve definitely come a long ways!

Alya: My younger sisters have taught me everything I know about beauty from skincare DIYs and beyond. That most valuable advice I've learned from them is probably Huda’s skincare tips. They have taught me all about how important it is to cleanse, exfoliate and moisturize especially as I get older. I'm currently obsessed with our new Wishful Honey Balm Jelly Moisturizer but, to be honest, I don’t spend that much time on my routines. Our Wishful Thirst Trap Hydrating Mask is probably my favorite because it’s a simple sheet mask!

5. Delilah Belle and Amelia Gray Hamlin

There’s the covers (Delilah’s roster includes Vogue Japan, WWD, and Grazia), the editorials (Amelia’s been featured in CR Fashion Book, W, and Vogue), and the fashion line (they launched their brand, DNA, in 2019). While Amelia Gray Hamlin and Delilah Belle Hamlin come from a pair of entertainers, the two sisters have a list of accomplishments that’s all their own. And despite the fact that playing pretend is a trait that you need to be successful as a model, the two women aren’t afraid to keep it real, whether it’s discussing their mental health struggles or filming TikTok dances with their mom. What’s next for these women? Well, if the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, it’s only up from here.

Cosmo: Where are you guys currently quarantining?

Delilah Belle & Amelia Gray: We're at our new house in LA.

What's one thing about beauty you've learned from your sister?

Delilah Belle: One thing I’ve learned from my sister about beauty is to listen to my body and love the way I look. She also turned me onto my favorite skin care line Biologique Recherche which cleared my skin and keeps me glowing!

Amelia Gray: I've learned so much, if not everything, from my sister. She taught me her secret about tinted moisturizing sunscreen—she uses it as a foundation. It looks so incredibly light and glowy. I’ve tried a bunch of tinted moisturizers but the CC one from It Cosmetics is incredible. That one is Delilah's favorite too. She’s also inspired my skincare routine so much—she’s always taken incredible care of her skin.

6. Jordyn and Jodie Woods

Jordyn’s recently stepped into her own spotlight—she launched Secndnture, a size-inclusive workout line, joined forces with Boohoo to develop two clothing collections, released a lash line with Eylure, competed on The Masked Singer, and starred in Grown-ish and BET original movie Sacrifice. And walking with her every step of the way is her sister, Jodie. The two look nearly identical, like copy and paste identical, even though, you know, there’s that whole nine-year age difference. But regardless of the age gap, the two are inseparable, sharing everything from boy advice to makeup tips.

Cosmo: Where are you guys currently quarantining?

Jordyn and Jodie: We're at our mom's house in LA.

What's one thing about beauty you've learned from your sister?

Jordyn: The best makeup hack I've learned from Jodie is soap brows—it's a trend on TikTok that she shared with me. Her beauty knowledge is always on point.

Jodie: The best makeup hack I've learned from Jordyn is ombré lips. She always has a nice brown shade around the edges and a pretty nude color in the middle that comes out perfect every time! I'm always admiring her lip hacks.

7. Angel and Dren Coleman

Angel and Dren know how to work a party, even if it’s virtual. Since March, when New York City shut down, the twin DJs took their talents to Instagram Live to give us a reason to dance when it seemed like there was none. What initially began as a hobby turned into a full-fledged career, taking them all around the world. So what happens when your internationally jet-setting profession screeches to a halt? You keep going. But when your job is to create vibes and boost energy levels, you don't stop because of a lockdown; you just move the celebration online.

Cosmo: Where are you guys currently quarantining?

Angel and Dren: We're in Harlem [in NYC].

What’s one thing about beauty you’ve learned from your sister?

Angel: Dren always keeps an aloe vera plant in the house to make DIY face masks. She’ll sometimes use it straight or mix it in a bowl with raw sugar before she slathers it on.

Dren: Angel and I don’t play around with our natural fruit juices, so when she makes a papaya smoothie, she’ll also make a natural papaya-based face mask with the blended papaya puree and honey. We put the mask on for 15 minutes and then rinse. The papaya helps keep things bright and exfoliated.
