6-year-old dragged behind bus on her way home from school after backpack gets caught

A six-year-old Utah girl was dragged behind her school bus after her backpack got caught in the vehicle, police said.

The girl and a few other students at J.R. Elementary School were dropped off by the Wasatch County School bus on Monday afternoon when her bag was caught on the side of bus, possibly in the wheel, Salt Lake City news station KUTV reported. As the school bus continued to the next stop, the girl was dragged about ten to 15 feet before the bus stopped again.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Nick Street told Gephardt Daily that the student was transported to the Heber Valley Hospital by ambulance. According to KSL, the girl suffered some scrapes and bruises on her head, arm and leg. By 10 p.m. Monday evening, the girl was recovering at her home.

Wasatch County School District and the Utah Highway Patrol are currently investigating the incident.

The school released the following statement regarding the accident: "Today, upon exiting the school bus, a student received non-life-threatening injuries. The student was transported to Heber Valley Hospital. Wasatch County School District and Utah Highway Patrol are currently investigating the incident and the driver has been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation.

"The safety and well-being of our 7,000 students is the number one priority of Wasatch County School District. Our thoughts are with the student and her family."

A representative for J.R. Smith Elementary School did not immediately respond to Yahoo Lifestyle’s requests for comment.
