6 Totally Fresh Decorating Ideas for the Kids' Playroom

From Good Housekeeping

Creating a fun space for your kids to play doesn't mean you have to build a kindergarten classroom in your basement. Case in point: The modern spaces you see here, all from the brain trust of three chic bloggers - Cassie Freeman from Hi Sugarplum!, Kristin Jackson from Hunted Interior and Emily Clark of Emily A. Clark. They recently teamed up with Target to revamp their own playrooms with the company's new kid-friendly decor line, Pillowfort. Even if your summer is spread too thin for a complete makeover, you can still fast-track an inspiring space with these smart tips:

1. Disguise your storage.

Use stylish storage solutions, like wooden crates, to hide everything from kids' toys to extra throws and office supplies. "I wanted to optimize the storage these beautiful built-ins offer," says Jackson. "With two small children, toys can feel as if they're taking over - adding the crates helped keep the space visually uncluttered."

2. Turn an unused corner into a work station.

Put a small, unused nook to work by adding a slim-profile desk and chair for a streamlined workspace. A small rug helps it feel separate from the other areas of your home. "My daughter is very creative, so I wanted to carve out a space that would help encourage her passions," says Freeman, who transformed a staircase landing into a creative zone for her daughter. "I chose pieces that are able to grow with her, and still fit the aesthetic of our home."

3. Choose low-profile furniture in a small space.

Make the most of a XS area with low ceilings by opting for low-profile furniture that doesn't overwhelm the room. Here, Clark paired a low-back navy sectional with shorter Pillowfort mid-century nightstands (acting as side tables) for a setup that is functional and space-appropriate.

4. Rethink the gallery wall.

Next time you're looking to dress up an empty wall, think outside the frame. A wall filled with playful stuffed animal heads, a cool collection of old oars or even vintage plates are all fresh takes on the traditional gallery wall. "Creating a focal point out of wall decals and a cluster of whimsical animal heads was the first thought I had when designing this playroom," says Jackson. "Artwork doesn't have to be confined by a frame."

5. Create multiple seating options.

Encourage story swapping, relaxation, reading and more by laying out a room with several designated seating areas. Whether it's a duo of stools centered around a side table, a comfy club chair or even a bright pink corduroy bean bag from Pillowfort (we're into it!), a variety of nooks and seating options will ensure you make the most of your space.

6. Use color to tie a space together.

Unite a room filled with different patterns and colors by choosing a shade to repeat throughout the space. Here, hits of cherry red in the rug, pillows, lamp and accessories help tie together Clark's attic play space.
