3 Fresh Fall Hair Color Trends You Need to Try

The temperatures are dropping, but hair colors are heating up. This fall is all about warm tones, bold shades, and embracing your natural regrowth. The COVID-19 pandemic has upended nearly every part of our lives, and that includes our beauty routines. Instead of heading to the salon every six weeks for a highlight, many of us have chosen low-maintenance hues that will last us months without a touch-up. Plus, it's a smart idea to invest in quality products to increase the longevity of your color, too. We asked the pros about how to make that freshly done color look gorgeous weeks (or even months) after you've had it colored.

How to Make Your Fall Hair Color Last Longer

First, you want to be careful when you wash your hair. "The more you shampoo your hair, the more your color will fade," explains Brian O'Connor, celebrity hairstylist and artistic director and co-founder of Good Dye Young. And when you do suds up, make sure you're doing so mindfully. "It's really important to use a good wet line that is sulfate-free and includes the right ingredients that will help you to preserve your color," says Gina Rivera, founder of Phenix Salon Suites, By Gina, and Colours by Gina. Try the top-rated OlaplexNo. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo ($28, Sephora) and the No. 5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner ($28, Sephora). O'Connor also recommends rinsing with cold water to keep the hair cuticle closed, which locks your color in. He also likes to finish with a conditioning treatment, such as the Amika Soulfood Nourishing Mask ($28, Revolve).

Another thing you should do is lay off your hot tools. (You're not going anywhere, anyway.) When you use your blow dryer, curling wand, or flat iron, make sure you use a primer. I swear by the Olaplex No. 6 Bond Smoother Reparative Styling Creme ($28, Sephora), followed by the brand's No. 7 Bonding Oil ($28, Sephora) for my light blonde locks. "Remember, the healthier that your hair is, the more easily you will reach and maintain the results that you would like when applying color," Rivera adds.

Now that you know how to keep your tresses healthy and your color long-lasting, here are three trends that you should try this autumn.

Fall Hair Color Trends

Heavy Roots

Sure, you could rely on a root touch-up spray when your re-growth starts to show, or you could get a color that's easy to grow out in the beginning. Combining a root with lighter strands "creates an over darker tone but leaves you with beautiful blonde pieces that stand out more against the darker tones," says Kasey Zylstra, owner of DSM Salon and Spa in Des Moines, Iowa. Plus, this looks means you only need to head to your stylist two to three times per year to keep up.

Rich Reds

"Fiery reds will make loud statements this season," Rivera explains. There are many ways you can go with this trend, including something super bright (like the shade shown here) or a subtler auburn color mixed with brunette. Reds can fade fast, so make sure you're using the right shampoo, such as the Joico Color Infuse Red Shampoo ($19, Ulta), to keep your hair bright.

Punches of Color

If you've always wanted to try a striking shade but not sure you want to do your whole head, consider adding color to just your roots or your ends. "It's a more wearable way to use unnatural pigments," says Emily Boulin, owner of Til' Death Salon in Baltimore. After trying this look, you might become bread enough to dye your whole head for winter.
