Serena Williams first took to the set of an SI Swimsuit photoshoot in 2003, only eight years into her lengthy professional tennis career. She returned to the fold the following year, then again in 2017—many more years into her journey as an athlete and with several more championships to her name—taking to the beaches of Turks and Caicos for features alongside fellow tennis professionals Caroline Wozniacki and Genie Bouchard.

“I’m really excited to be back shooting for the Swimsuit issue,” she said on set of the tropical photoshoot. “It’s always something that’s really fun, and it always feels really good.”

Just as she was excited to be back, Williams was equally hopeful of posing for a series of photos that might inspire other people to appreciate their own physiques. Williams wanted those who saw the final photos “to come away with the fact that it’s O.K. to be comfortable in your body,” she said. “I’m not a size two—and it’s O.K. to look good and feel good.”

The 42-year-old has always been a powerhouse in the game of tennis, and a representative of powerful women athletes everywhere. She wanted others to know that they could “be strong and be sexy and be a woman and be unbreakable” all at the same time, she said. “I really want to have that influence for people out there [who] have my body type.”

Below are six of our favorite photos of the powerful mother of two in Turks and Caicos.
