In less than a week, two mass shooting have occurred in the US, resulting in the deaths of 18 innocent people. The events are a reminder to US citizens that our country has a gun problem and no one is safe. We cannot go to the grocery store or the spa without fearing for our lives.

The fight for gun control has been a long one, but it is far from over and it's more important than ever to join the cause. If you want to take action to prevent something like this from happening again, consider these quick and easy steps. Together, we can end gun violence.

1. Learn about federal and state gun laws.

It's so important to be educated on gun laws so you know what you're fighting for and what needs to be changed. Luckily, Everytown has you covered. From statistics to state-by-state laws, check out their site and research program to inform yourself about what's really going on in this country.

2. Call your representatives.

You've probably heard this so many times, but you need to pick up the phone and call your government officials. It may sound a little intimidating, but it will only take a minute. Plus, 5calls.org will tell you just who to call and what to say. If you're still feeling nervous, get together with your friends (safely or over Zoom) and make calls together.

3. Sign a petition.

There are so many gun control petitions going around right now, but if you want to keep track of the new and the old, you can visit Change.com and follow petitions surrounding this topic. And if you don't see one you like, you can start your own and build support from there.

4. Donate to gun control organizations.

There are a number of groups that are advocating for gun control, and they can always use more support. If you have the means, consider donating to an organization. Even if you can't contribute much, any amount helps. Here are some great orgs leading the fight against gun violence that need all the funds they can get:

  • Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is a grassroots movement working to pass public safety measures and close loopholes that affect the safety of American families.

  • In 1993, The Brady Bill was passed (with the help of President Biden, then the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee) and it mandated background checks when purchasing guns. Unfortunately, ten years later, the Bill expired and was not renewed. Still, The Brady Campaign is working to end gun violence through education, litigation, and legislation.

  • The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence has been around since 1974 and is the nation's oldest gun violence prevention organization. They believe "gun violence should be rare and abnormal" and they're working toward that goal through policy development, advocacy, community engagement, and effective training.

  • Everytown is the largest gun violence prevention organization in the country and they are building a movement with one goal: to save lives.

5. Register to vote.

Yes, we just had an election, but that doesn't mean there isn't more to vote on. Local elections are constantly occurring around the country so, if you haven't registered already, don't wait another day. Getting involved and electing representatives who support gun control is essential for change. Rock the Vote is a nonpartisan nonprofit that works to empower young people, and it's a great resource for first-time voters. There, you can register to vote, learn about voting policies in your state, and sign up for reminders so you never miss an election.
