These 5 U.S. Cities Have the Most Morning People (and New York City Isn't One of Them)

A survey from Brooklyn Bedding says these American cities are home to the largest number of people who get up before 7 a.m. Is your city on the list?

Does where you live affect what time you wake up—or is there some correlation between your home city and your sleep-wake habits? Well, we’re not in any position to make those claims—but, thanks to a survey from mattress brand Brooklyn Bedding, we do know that certain cities in the U.S. are home to a higher number of early-rising citizens, on average, than other cities in the country. (In this case, early risers refers to citizens who report waking up before 7 a.m. and later sleepers are those who wake after 8 a.m.)

For a more in-depth look into people's varied sleep routines and wake-up habits across the U.S., Brooklyn Bedding conducted a 20-minute online survey of 1,000 participants from all over the country. The results of the survey reveal that the city with the largest number of early birds is Phoenix, with 47 percent of Phoenix-dwelling sleepers rising before 7 a.m. This could be due to a desire to get up and beat the Arizona heat, but there's probably no concrete way to know why such a large majority of the Phoenix population consistently rises so early. It could be the general nature and schedules of companies and industries based there, or an overall up-and-at-'em spirit engendered by the sunny weather—but whatever it is, it's getting people out of bed.

As for the city with the highest percentage of later sleepers, Seattle takes the cake with 44 percent saying their wake-up time occurs after 8 a.m. Do jobs start later there? Is the vibe more relaxed? Should we move there immediately? Someone from Seattle please let us know.

Interestingly, New York City—notorious for its citizens' go-go-go mindset—didn't make the early riser list. In fact, according to to Brooklyn Bedding's report, NYC had the second-highest percentage (40 percent) of later sleepers, next to Seattle. Of course, this doesn't mean New Yorkers or Seattleites are lazy—or that no one in those cities gets up before 8 a.m (we know you're out there, and we see you!). It just means that in other cities there are even more people with early alarms, which brings the average up.
