If there were inner beauty contests for furniture (hear us out) recliners would win every time. Big, comfy and great for weekend power naps, there’s a reason they’re found in so many homes and have endured as a furniture staple for so long. Yet the classic recliner, with its lumpy, overstuffed shape and often bland color options, has hardly been considered a design-forward piece of furniture.

If you still think that recliners belong in the knotty pine-paneled basements of your youth, however, or should be banished to the man-cave of your current abode — we implore you to think again. In recent years, discerning shoppers have been able to find more and more recliners worthy of a place in even the most sophisticated spaces. (We’re looking at you, living room.) From chic fabric colors and textures to of-the-moment design (hello, midcentury modern style!) it’s time to give the humble reclining chair a second look and a second sit (or nap). Here are five recliners that no one will believe you can actually kick back in.

1. ANJ Pushback Recliner

With a classic silhouette, this recliner feels timeless, not dated. When positioned at 90 degrees, it looks just like a normal armchair that’s great for reading or watching TV. When you sit, however, you can choose between two reclining positions: 120 degrees (again, for for watching TV or reading), or a more laid-back 145 degrees for naps. The generous foam padding makes sure whichever you choose, you’ll be comfortable.

2. Christopher Knight Home Mid Century Modern Recliner

With a slim, midcentury modern design, this is a true incognito recliner. When upright, even a discerning guest would have a hard time spotting a recliner. It also comes in ten colors, ranging from neutrals to eye-popping blues and reds. While it isn’t as padded as a classic recliner, it still has ample foam padding in the seat and back. Added bonus: Because the design is more slim, it’s also is great for small spaces.
