49ers WR Deebo Samuel carted off field in second quarter with ankle injury

The San Francisco 49ers are dealing with another injury to a star player.

Versatile wide receiver Deebo Samuel suffered an ankle injury in the second quarter of the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters postgame Samuel did not sustain an ankle fracture, and most likely suffered a high-ankle sprain.

The 26-year-old was injured on a 3-yard run when his leg was twisted as he was tackled to the ground. He fumbled on the play and the football was recovered by Bucs linebacker Lavonte David.

Samuel stayed on the field in obvious pain as the football was recovered. A visibly emotional Samuel eventually was carted off the field. As Samuel exited the stadium, 49ers players went over to the cart to show their support and the crowd cheered as the cart went toward the tunnel.

The 2021 first-team All-Pro is one of the most versatile players in the NFL. The 49ers use him as a wide receiver and running back. He compiled 217 catches, 3,167 receiving yards and 12 touchdown catches in his career entering Week 14. On the ground, he tallied 757 yards and 13 career rushing touchdowns.
