We're back again with a rap-heavy week in best songs world, with big ones incoming from DaBaby, Danny Brown, and more. Plus Zedd and Kehlani's "Good Thing" is the titular good, and more in this wee's 4.5 Best Songs You Need to Hear.
Danny Brown feat. Run the Jewels, "3 Tearz"
Danny Brown blesses us with one more single before his new album uknowhatimsayin¿ drops on Friday. Come for the stellar collaboration between rap weirdos—”3 Tearz” features Run the Jewels on a track produced by JPEGMAFIA—and stay for the classic Big Lebowski reference.—Colin Groundwater, assistant to the editor in chief
I can’t stop talking about DaBaby, and I can’t stop listening to DaBaby. I have full blown DaBaby mania. Every DaBaby beat sounds like a chase scene. Every DaBaby bar is just wild shit talk said through the widest, tallest sneer. Every time the bass hits in a DaBaby song it feels like a shotgun slug to the stomach. DaBaby has the exact recipe for success right now and that’s really really rapping as hard as he can 1000% of the time. It’s an excessive show of force for no other reason than to purely dominate the music industry right now and it sounds so unbelievably exciting.—Gabe Conte, digital producer
Robert Glasper feat. Baby Rose, Rapsody, & James Poyser, "Expectations"
Pianist/producer Robert Glasper dropped a new mixtape this week, Fuck Yo Feelings, a wonderfully eclectic hour-and-11 minutes of jazz and hip-hop with assists from Herbie Hancock, Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def), YBN Cordae, Denzel Curry, Mick Jenkins, SiR, and many more. "Expectations" steals the show, in my humble opinion, for sticking Baby Rose with Rapsody on the same track. They're foils in terms of style and flow, but weirdly enough, they work perfectly in tandem. Also, Rose has the most unique voice in R&B right now, which I promise is a compliment.—Alex Shultz, editorial assistant
Zedd & Kehlani, "Good Thing"
This... this is very good. It's like Zedd said to himself "How do I make a Broadway song slap?" and Kehlani replied "I got you" and then voila—this.—Brennan Carley, associate editor
And our .5 of the week…
Everything About This
I don’t know shit about Succession (that’s one of those shows for older millennials) but I do know that Mario Paint whips ass, and I think that Nintendo should make another one (Miyamoto if you’re reading this I love you).—G.C.
