33 “Heartstopper” Details That Are Small And Clever, But You Might’ve Missed Them The First Time

1.The tree on the Truham school uniforms blooms throughout the series as the seasons change and romance blossoms.
2.Plus, the spades on the crest change to hearts during Charlie's fantasy.
3.Nick has a framed drawing of him and Nellie on his wall.
4.Charlie's Insta bio is just an emoji of leaves, which is a reference to the iconic leaf doodles that appear throughout the series.
5.The central colors that represent Nick and Charlie are yellow and blue, which show up together a lot throughout the series.
6.There's a rainbow lens flare when Charlie first makes eye contact with Nick.
7.And there's another one after Charlie kisses Nick in the rain.
8.There are two cartoon lovebirds hanging out in a tree behind Nick in Episode 5.
9.Not only are there leaf doodles and lovebirds behind Nick and Charlie on the train in the last episode, but Heartstopper writer, Alice Oseman, is sitting across the aisle with a rainbow bag.

10.Charlie's frequently used emojis connect to his personality, his loved ones, and the Heartstopper doodles.
The first two heart/love emojis are from messaging Nick and his friends. The rainbow and rainbow flag are for his sexuality. The dog is Nellie (and in my heart 🥺 is also for Nellie). The shameful sweating emoji represents him apologizing all the time, while the generic smiley is the one he uses when he pretends he's okay. The film reel is for Tao. The trans flag is for Elle. The pink hearts, sparkles, and leaves are all signature Heartstopper doodles. You can also see the edge of a snowflake emoji for the snow day and the nerd emoji for Charlie being a "gay nerd."
11.As Nick watches Tara and Darcy kiss at Harry's party, the lights on his face flash blue, purple, and pink, which are the colors of the bisexual flag.
12.The lighting in the bowling alley is also very bisexual.

I would normally call this a coincidence, but the line in the comic is, "I wasn't born in 1920."
22.In the arcade, the doodles around Elle are pixelated like a video game, except for the ones reflected in her glasses.
23.Charlie has a huge pile of different colored Converse in his closet even though he almost always just wears his dirty white pair.
24.The Sports Day banner has Alice Oseman's signature font and doodle style.
25.The art room changes throughout the year as students create new projects.
A lot of the projects explore themes of growth and identity like eyes, doors, self-portraits, and plants.
The little recycled bottle cacti even "grow" paper flowers.
26.Elle wears some outfits that are light blue, light pink, and white, like the trans flag.
27.As butterflies start to metaphorically flutter between Elle and Tao during Sports Day, there's literal butterfly art on the wall and in the doorway.
Butterflies are also a symbol for the trans community.
28.The wave mural in the hallway is designed in Alice Oseman's art style.
The droplets flying off the waves even look like Alice's leaves. Okay, now I'm done talking about leaves.
29.Elle's landscape painting appears to be a river with trees along it, which resembles some of the places we've seen her spend time with Tao.

31.According to the set decorator, Maxwell Fine, the merry-go-round ride was filled with crew members who, once they'd committed, had to keep riding over and over again until they got enough footage.
