After a long week, you’ve finally reached your serenity: watching an episode of Jeopardy accompanied by your dog and a crisp glass of Chardonnay. But before you can take a sip, your sister walks in and begins proudly singing out every answer before the contestants can get their thumb on the buzzer. Her behavior wouldn’t bother you, but just last week she turned your birthday soiree (complete with hand-twisted candles and vintage tableware) into an all-out debate and, on her way out the door, informed you that your hair was curled incorrectly (the waves should turn away from your face, not toward it).
Adhering to your beliefs is admirable, but we all know friends who are veering toward know-it-all territory. So why do some of us think we’re always right while others are open to hearing everyone’s take? Let’s look to astrology, shall we? If you’re curious about which zodiac signs are last to surrender their opinions, keep reading.
(Psst: Your astrological traits involve twelve celestial bodies, not just your sun sign. To discover your entire planetary portrait, check out your birth chart.)
1. Virgo (Aug 23 – Sep 22):
Ok, we admit it: Virgos are kind of brilliant. Ruled by Mercury, the planet of intellect and information exchange, the earth signs dazzle us with their intriguing facts and speedy wit. And while they may be dream dinner party guests when it comes to stimulating conversation, Virgos’ keen observations can go a little too far. Pointers like, “If you added vinegar to that water, your flowers wouldn’t be dying” or “Ah, let me show you a better way to dice those peppers” are Virgo's way of showing they care…and that they think they’re always right. Nimble-minded Virgo can’t help but envision every outcome of the evening, from delightful to disastrous. While someone else might calmly watch you cook, Virgo sees a potential accident in the way you’re holding your knife, a steaming pot that might possibly bubble over and a lemon that could add a touch of brightness to your stew. So yes, Virgo thinks their way is the best way…but since they’ve already raced through 40 other ideas, these planners are probably on to something.
2. Leo (July 23 – Aug 22):
To the proud astrological lions, the only thing worse than being wrong is admitting you’re wrong. The fire signs infuse passion and power into every area of their lives—whether they’re racing around the park to beat their own best time, singing in the car at the top of their lungs or engaging in a heated political standoff via Twitter. Leos love to entertain; by proving their talent to others, they’re proving it to themselves, too. As one of the four fixed signs in astrology, Leos are direct and earnest in their beliefs. These loyal signs stand by their friends, family… and their own opinions. They know Dear Evan Hansen is the greatest musical in Broadway history and they want 20 minutes to deliver their convincing speech. Being seen, heard and understood brings Leo deep fulfillment. And so does the validation of being right. Leo might want to be the most impressive person in the room, but there’s nothing more impressive than a thoughtful listener.
3. Aquarius (Jan 20 – Feb 18):
Aquarians understand right and wrong from an ethical perspective. As air signs, they’re deep thinkers who question the beliefs and practices others follow instinctively. There’s always a “why” when you’re chatting with clever Aquarius. “Why are some animals pets and others are dinner?” “Why does society value science more than art?” As the inventors and iconoclasts of the zodiac, Aquarians want to see change in their world. To these visionaries, anyone who doesn’t share their innovative views must be wrong. But by dismissing those who disagree with them, Aquarians lose out on opportunities to understand others. Armed with a strong moral code and a sense of responsibility to stand up for others, these fixed signs believe you’re either for progress or against it. There’s no time to waste by wavering or standing in the middle ground.
