Skip class and enjoy a little nostalgia.
I mean, it's Ferris Bueller's Day Off. There are few films as iconically '80s as the misadventures of Matthew Broderick on a hooky day from high school. It's the groundwork for any high schooler, then and now, looking to take a sick day from class and make the most of it.
Jay: Actually, HHS secretary Azar, a former pharmaceutical company director, said after his appointment in Nov 2017 that the thing that keeps him up at night worrying about this country is its ability to contend with a global pandemic of respiratory virus nature. He had approached tRump in late 2017 and in early 2018, about increasing CDC capacity to contend with such viruses. At the time, HHS was continuing the program, started under President Obama, to teach foreign scientists to recognize coronavirus strains and identify those that may transfer to humans and produce harmful effects. Two months before the novel coronavirus is thought to have begun its deadly advance in Wuhan, China, the Trump administration ended a $200-million pandemic early-warning program aimed at training scientists in China and other countries to detect and respond to such a threat. The project, launched by the U.S. Agency for International Development in 2009, identified 1,200 different viruses that had the potential to erupt into pandemics, including more than 160 novel coronaviruses. The initiative, called PREDICT, also trained and supported staff in 60 foreign laboratories — including the Wuhan lab that identified SARS-CoV-2, the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19. So there you have it. Not only did tRump disband the CDCs GLOBAL Pandemic Response Team, and reassign those people to other functions in the CDC and NIH, but he eliminated the head of this team whose job it would have been to identify pandemic threats and report and advise on those threats to the POTUS, the joint chiefs of staff, FEMA, DHS and other emergency response agencies. In response to the requests by Azar to increase funding for PPE and other strategic reserve items, tRump actually cut the budget allocation by more 25% in 2018. That GOP tax cut bill in 2017 has come at a heavy price!
