“How is this my life?” marvels Hailee Steinfeld as she snaps an iPhone picture of her own face, larger than life, on a billboard for her new Apple TV+ show Dickinson. Starting off in an early-morning hair and makeup session for an appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan, Vogue spends 24 hours in the 22-year-old actor, singer, and songwriter’s life. On this day, that life includes live TV, a Times Square visit to peek at her Dickinson posters, and—of course—an evening spent celebrating the brand-new show, which hits Apple TV+ on November 1.
There’s plenty of glamour in Steinfeld’s day, but she also makes time for the little things: a FaceTime session with her friend Julie, a little rest (complete with candles, tea, and a monogrammed robe) before the Dickinson premiere, room service, and a photo shoot of her surroundings on a disposable camera. (One of Steinfeld’s subjects is the Brooklyn Bridge, which, she explains, she recently crossed on foot for the first time: “You definitely have to commit, because once you’re in the middle of that thing, there’s no way out.”)
Back at her hotel, Steinfeld gets glammed up and slips on a dazzling sequined Francesco Scognamiglio gown before embracing her family and friends (including Julie, who surprises her with a visit) and heading outside to catch a car to her premiere, her scarlet-soled Louboutins descending the steps. “It’s happening!” Steinfeld squeals, before posing for paparazzi shots and selfies, and she’s right: it certainly is.
