22 Cringe Wedding First Dance Songs That People Need To Stop Using
We asked the BuzzFeed Community to tell us which wedding songs are overused and have ill-fitting lyrics for a first dance. Here's what they had to say, along with some selections of my own:
1."All of Me" by John Legend
Still from the music video with the lyric: "Not only is it overused, but it just isn't romantic. He can't mention one thing he loves about her without mentioning one of her faults."
2."Iris" by Goo Goo Dolls
Still from the music video with the lyric: I actually find this sound more depressing than romantic. It's mostly about a guy feeling bad about himself.
3."Someone Like You" by Adele
Still from the music video with the lyric: "This is the most typical-sounding breakup song. It has no place at weddings."
4."Always" by Bon Jovi
It's a breakup song. Even Bon Jovi has said that it's not supposed to be a love song.
5."Skinny Love" by Bon Iver
This is literally a song I cry to when I'm sad. I can't wrap my head around why people choose it for a first dance.
6."Better Man" by Pearl Jam
"Eddie V. is singing about his mother’s abusive relationship. He has been very open about writing it and about the 'bastard' who married his mother. Great wedding song, yikes!"
7."I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston
"It's about a girl realizing she will never be with the guy of her dreams."
8."Ho Hey" by The Lumineers
"Wishing for unrequited love isn't a marriage song. If you're getting married, I hope you've found really requited love!"
9."My Heart Will Go On" by Céline Dion
It's romantic in the way of reminiscing on a "right person, wrong time" way, not a first dance kind of romantic.
10."Cherry Wine" by Hozier
"The lyrics actually reveal a darker story that literally has me sobbing. It's just NOT romantic."
11."Marry Me" by Thomas Rhett
Yes, someone's getting married in this song. But it's not the singer, and it's just more sad than it is romantic.
12."Every Breath You Take" by The Police
"It’s about a stalker! Not a good way to start off a marriage."
13."Stay With Me" by Sam Smith
Not many people know it's actually about the singer clinging onto a one-night stand that really wants nothing to do with them.

Even James Blunt said that this song wasn't intended to be romantic...
18."Make You Feel My Love" by Adele
She just has SO MANY perfect, fitting songs that there's no excuse why this sad song about looking back on past relationships should be used.
19."Sweetest Thing" by U2
Bono literally wrote this as an "I'm sorry — please take me back" song, so maybe not the best pick.
20."Dancing on My Own" by Calum Scott
I understand that the slow beat and dancing narrative seem fitting at first, but something about unrequited love doesn't quite fit well in a wedding.
21."Marry You" by Bruno Mars
Not exactly something you want to hear RIGHT AFTER you get married.
22.And "Say You Won't Let Go" by James Arthur
"I'm a wedding photographer, and it's the only one I truly can’t stand. I get the sentiment behind the song, but he talks about her throwing up and being too drunk. Weird lyrics to have your first dance to."
