Last week, the Supreme Court voted to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision that has protected citizens' rights to have a safe and legal abortion for nearly 50 years. Now, about 26 states are expected to outright ban abortion, and several celebrities have spoken out, donated money, or cursed out the Supreme Court on behalf of abortion rights. Here's what they said:
1.Selena Gomez called the Supreme Court's decision "horrific," saying, "A woman should have the right to CHOOSE what she wants to do with her body. End of story."
Watching a Constitutional right be stripped away is horrific. A woman should have the right to CHOOSE what she wants to do with her own body. End of story.
2.Lizzo shared a pro-abortion protest sign with a twist on her iconic "About Damn Time" lyrics, and she captioned the photo with this message: "The most important thing is action & loud voices. @plannedparenthood @abortionfunds and organizations like them — will need funding to continue offering services to people who are most harmed by this ban. Black women and women of color have historically had disproportionately less access to family planning resources — this is a great loss but not a new one."
Then, she pledged to donate $500,000 from her upcoming tour — with Live Nation matching her donation — to organizations leading the way in abortion rights.
I’m pledging $500k from my upcoming tour to Planned Parenthood and Abortion Rights. Live Nation agreed to match— to make it 1 MILLION dollars
3.Lizzo's forever bae, Chris Evans, also donated to the cause!
This is a great thread. It offers links to donate, information about different clinics and their status, as well as support lines. I’ve donated and if you have the means I hope you do too. https://t.co/N1yLPdUfY3
4.In the middle of her performance, Olivia Rodrigo took a moment to defend people's right to choose, saying, "I couldn't pass up the opportunity to talk about how heartbroken I am over the Supreme Court's potential decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. ... I hope we can raise our voices to protect our right to have a safe abortion, which is a right that so many people before us have worked so hard to get.”
olivia rodrigo: “so many women and so many girls are gonna die because of this” no sugarcoating at all! as it SHOULD BE! and then proceeding to call out the 5 members of the Supreme Court!!
5.Megan Thee Stallion used her platform to share ways people can donate, support, and take action in getting our rights secured...
...and during her set at Glastonbury Music Festival on Saturday night, she told the crowd, "I want to have it on the motherfucking record that the hot boys and the hot girls do not support this bullshit that y’all campaign for. My body is my motherfucking choice."
Megan Thee Stallion speaking on Roe vs Wade…we love how she Advocates for Women🖤
6.Harry Styles took to Twitter to share his dismay for "a truly dark day for America."
I’m absolutely devastated for the people of America today. Check on your friends.Look after each other. We’re all in this together, and the fight is just beginning. A truly dark day for America.
7.Bella Hadid shared an infographic on Instagram, which outlines just how harmful taking away peoples' right to abortion can be.
8.Taylor Swift said she was "terrified" for the state of the country.
I’m absolutely terrified that this is where we are - that after so many decades of people fighting for women’s rights to their own bodies, today’s decision has stripped us of that. https://t.co/mwK561oxxl
9.And Halsey projected a strong message behind her during a set, declaring, "Don't wait for revolutionaries to change the world. Be the revolutionaries. No one is coming to do the work for us. The work is ours and we have to do it now."
10.Keke Palmer questioned why this country keeps "overturning the wrong things."
I’m past disgusted w/ my country and their constant inability to protect one another’s right & keep their word. How u overturning the wrong things? So many things to overturn that make sense. But this is what you chose??
11.Rita Moreno reflected on a botched abortion she had years ago, saying, "I think about the young girls. Taking it to the most extreme, girls who get pregnant because of rape or incest. Unfair isn’t a strong enough word, but it’s unfair.”
12.Phoebe Bridgers opened up about her abortion and the ease with which she was privileged enough to obtain it. "Everyone deserves that kind of access," she said, before sharing a list of places to donate.
I had an abortion in October of last year while I was on tour. I went to planned parenthood where they gave me the abortion pill. It was easy. Everyone deserves that kind of access. Here’s a big list of places you can donate to right now. https://t.co/jT0sk6CeNX
Then, at Glastonbury, Pheobe led a "Fuck the Supreme Court" chant.
.@phoebe_bridgers at #Glastonbury: “You wanna say fuck the Supreme Court on 3?”
13.Yung Miami couldn't fathom a world in which abortion access was not readily available.
Imagine not being able to get an abortion 😰
14.Justice Smith questioned whether the US was only fair to "cis, straight white men."
like??? who is this country even for?? is it really just for cis straight white men?? like just fuck the rest of us?????
15.And track star Sha'Carri Richardson boldly asked, "Why would I want to represent a country that has no respect for their women?"
Why would I want to represent a country that has no respect for their women the only reason that all of them that make these “laws” exist ?!!!
16.Dove Cameron shared a few ways to take care of yourself during "dark days like this":
non self destructive ways to self medicate today after the SCOTUS ruling. bc we don’t need to be crueler to our bodies on dark days like this. free write. turn off all the lights and strip naked and lay in a dark room. allow yourself to cry. meditate, or do something meditative.
17.George Takei questioned why firearms have fewer restrictions than our bodies:
So let me get this straight. A state has the right to restrict abortions, but doesn’t have the right to restrict firearms? Is that what we have now in these “United” States?
18.Samuel L. Jackson challenged justice Clarence Thomas's originalist ideology:
How’s Uncle Clarence feeling about Overturning Loving v Virginia??!!
19.Danny DeVito had a very simple message:
Supreme Court my ass
20.Hayley Kiyoko shared why voting for officials who represent our bests interest is essential.
When people talk about how their vote ‘doesn’t matter’ or ‘we are screwed anyway’.. well. We elected a man 6 years ago that gave 3 seats to the Supreme Court. And today those 3 people used their power to take away women and peoples rights to decide their own future.
21.And finally, Jessica Marie Garcia said what we were all thinking:
and they have the fucking nerve to call this a “free country”.
Did I miss anyone? Let me know in the comments.
