Remember last year’s Emmys, when Kate Winslet took home gold for her perfect pronunciation of “hoagie” and Emily in Paris was nominated for Best Comedy? With the announcement of this year’s nominations, it seems we may be in for another similarly batty ceremony.

Last year’s big winners were The Crown and The Queen’s Gambit, but this year, Succession and Ted Lasso seem poised to rule the night; Succession leads the pack with a whopping 25 nods, though Ted Lasso isn't far behind at 20. In a sign of welcome change, Squid Game has earned the most nominations ever for a foreign language show, with 14 mentions. And the comedy categories are full of first-time nominees, like What We Do in the Shadows and Abbott Elementary—but across the board, these nominations are a failure of imagination. Rather than watch a wide array of television and spread the awards around, the Television Academy went all-in on a handful of shows, heaping Succession, Hacks, Ted Lasso, Squid Game, The White Lotus, and Stranger Things with nominations. Did we really need five nominations for The White Lotus in one (1!) acting category? And as always, some worthy contenders were snubbed: Station Eleven was largely shut out of the Limited Series categories, while Yellowstone and Reservation Dogs also failed to get their names called.

Today’s nominations were announced in a live broadcast by actors Melissa Fumero and JB Smoove. Many details about the 2022 Emmys, including the host, location, and presenters, remain unannounced, but here’s what we do know: the 74th Emmy Awards will be held on Monday, September 12 at 8:00 PM ET, airing on NBC and streaming live on Peacock. Mark your calendars—it’s bound to be a night full of highs, lows, and whoas.
