Kick back and relax with this frozen raspberry dragon margarita

The refreshing margarita is a welcome staple for most drinkers. Whether it’s at a Mexican restaurant or during a boozy brunch, the ice-cold cocktail is a tasty treat.

In The Know’s Cocktail of the Week updates this classic with dragonfruit and raspberries. Trust us, you won’t want to pass on this sweet and tart, “grown-up slushy” once the warm weather really hits.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup raspberries

  • 12 ounces red dragon fruit, frozen and cubed

  • 3 ounces tequila

  • 1 ounce orange liqueur

  • 3 tablespoons agave

  • 2 cups ice

  • Lime, for garnish (optional)

  • White dragon fruit, for garnish (optional)

First, blend the frozen red dragon fruit, raspberries, tequila, orange liqueur and agave until smooth. Next, add two cups of ice and blend until it’s a slushy-like consistency. Finally, pour the frozen margarita into a few glasses and garnish each with lime and white dragon fruit.

Drinking a margarita is like drinking a piece of Mexican history — or mythology. The thing is, more than one person has claimed to invent the iconic cocktail. Carlos “Danny” Herrera says he created it in 1938 at his Tijuana restaurant Rancho La Gloria. Herrera allegedly made the drink for Majorie King, an actress who was allergic to every spirit but tequila.

But Margarita Sames, a Dallas socialite, said she invented the drink in 1948 for her friends, including Tommy Hilton. Hilton supposedly then added the cocktail to the hotel chain’s menu. However, the first Jose Cuervo importer in the U.S. advertised the liquor with the tagline, “Margarita: it’s more than a girl’s name” in 1945.

One thing we do know for sure is the frozen margarita’s origins. The first frozen margarita machine ever was invented by Dallas restaurateur Mariano Martinez in 1971.
