Season to season, your hair can go through a lot of changes. For example, winter tends to dry out your hair due to the lack of moisture in the cold air. It’s even not uncommon for people to end up with a dry scalp during this time. But the days of summer bring a whole different set of problems for your locks.
For one, the warmer temperatures and higher humidity in certain climates can cause your hair to frizz. Two, if you spend too much time in the sun, the UVA and UVB rays could break down the protein in your hair, cause discoloration, and breakage — including brittleness, split ends and dry strands.
So, to keep your hair looking fresh throughout the summer, we’ve rounded up a few things that could potentially help you maintain a healthy ‘do in the coming months.
Shop: AquaGuard Pre-Swim Hair Defense, $13.99
If you’re planning to hit the pool this summer, no need to be afraid of getting green hair. This AquaGuard Pre-Swim Hair Defense can prevent chlorine from getting in your hair and the damage that comes with it, such as dryness and brittleness.
Shop: Sun Bum 3 In 1 Leave In Conditioner Spray, $14.99
This 3-in-1 leave-in treatment spray is an easy way to ensure your hair gets its daily dose of moisture before you step outside. It’s made to protect, condition and detangle your locks, while also controlling split ends and preventing frizz. Not to mention, it’s vegan, paraben-free and enriched with noteworthy ingredients, including coconut oil, banana and pulp.
Listed as one of Amazon’s Choice items, this weightless finishing hair spray is designed to keep frizz and those pesky flyaways in check. Thanks to its patented humidity-resistant polymer, this top-rated spray helps provide your hair with “six times more humidity protection, static control and UV protection,” according to the product’s description.
Shop: OGX Fade-Defying + Orchid Oil Color Protect Oil, $9.43
If you’re deciding to keep your highlights this season, the OGX Orchid Oil is an affordable way to help keep your precious color from fading and drying out. It contains UVB/UVA filters to shield against the sun’s harsh rays, as well as extract and grape seed oil to give your lovely locks some hydration and shine.
This primer from Bumble and Bumble is by far one of the most popular items I’ve seen in the haircare world, thanks to its top reviews and special attention for damaged and color-treated hair. Not only does it help protect your mane from breakage and the harshness of the sun, but it also preps your hair for styling. According to the product description, it helps to “soften, silken, tame, de-frizz and detangle.”
Shop: Pureology Hydrate Moisturizing Shampoo, $27.50 (Orig. $30)
If your hair is already dry, a hydrating shampoo could potentially do wonders. Although the Pureology Hydrate Moisturizing Shampoo is a bit pricey, multiple reviewers on Amazon say you only need a little to see its nourishing results.
Shop: John Frieda Frizz Ease Daily Nourishment Shampoo, $6.97 (Orig. $8.99)
Another solid option may be this moisturizing shampoo from John Frieda. One, you can’t beat the price, and two, it claims it can reverse 75 percent of surface dryness. That’s partly because it’s formulated with silk protein, helps seal in moisture, and leaves your hair feeling smooth and soft.
If you’re not applying sunscreen to your scalp, you might want to start. According to Debra Jaliman, M.D., a Manhattan-based dermatologist, your scalp is more sensitive than the other parts of skin on your body.
“Many people don’t use a scalp sunscreen, which isn’t a good thing,” Jaliman told Prevention. “Since the scalp is at the highest point on your body, it burns more easily than other areas.”
That being said, the Coola Scalp and Hair Mist Organic Sunscreen can help nourish your hair’s roots and the sensitive skin at the top of your dome. Made with at least 70 percent organic ingredients, the actives in this sunscreen reduce “dullness, lock-in color and strengthen environmentally damaged hair,” according to the product’s description.
