UV sanitizers are taking over, especially in the space of phone and pocket-sized device sanitation. With tons of options currently available across retailers — from the block-like devices like these from Casetify and PhoneSoap to more disguised and chic options like this one from Sharper Image — it can be an overwhelming task to determine which one to choose.

With the most popular phone UV sanitizers usually retailing for upwards of $100, some folks may be deterred from shopping these trendy and useful products. However, this pocket-sized option from HoMedics sets itself apart from its pricier competitors with its retail value, form factor and functionality.

Described to kill “up to 99.9 percent of bacteria and viruses with no chemicals or mercury,” this slim device uses two UV-C germicidal LED lights to rid your phone of “household germs” in just one minute. The product’s description states the sanitization process takes 30 seconds on each side.

It should be noted, however, that it has not been specified what strains or types of viruses this device kills.

Unlike other UV sanitizers, the HoMedics UV-Clean device is said to feature a pop-up design that “maximizes light coverage” to ensure that the phone is thoroughly sanitized.

After the process is complete, users can simply collapse the device into its original flattened form and tuck it into a purse or pocket for portable use. The gadget is said to provide up to 70 uses per charge.

Not only is this sanitizer “guaranteed to fit virtually all smartphones” — but it can also clean the likes of keys, credit cards, pens, eyeglasses, and even a computer mouse.

As detailed in the device’s “Phone Fit Guarantee,” users are not satisfied with the HoMedics UV-Clean Phone Sanitizer may return it in its original condition within 30 days of purchase. “If you’re not happy, we’ll make it right! Sanitization Happiness Guaranteed,” it reads.

Boasting an overall average customer rating of 4.1 stars, this piece of tech is surely a customer favorite with several shoppers praising the device for its ease of use and compact design.

“Use the charging cord that came with it and charge it up,” one five-star reviewer wrote. “Put your phone in the UV-Clean Phone Sanitizer and zip it up, pull up by using the tabs on both sides of the case.”

Another shopper who has a Motorola Moto X phone shared that she frequently uses the product, writing, “It definitely gives me peace of mind to know I have a way to keep my phone germ free now. Easy to use, convenient, nice style and compact.”

Shoppers have also shared that it “makes no noise” during the sanitization process. “The only indication that it’s working is the blinking light on top.” one reviewer noted.

One particular critique shoppers had, however, is that, while it sanitizes “as advertised,” the charge on the device itself “doesn’t last as long” as the described 70 uses per charge. However, reviewers outlined that this is certainly not a deal-breaker when taking into account how well the gadget performs.
