2-year-old proudly shows off her Tagalog vocab in sweet TikTok: ‘Such a smart girl’

A toddler’s impressive bilingual skills are going viral on TikTok — just in time for AAPI Heritage Month.

Folk pop musicians Michael and Carissa Alvarado (@ustheduo) gained over 1.1 million views, 180,000 likes and 5,000 comments when they uploaded the adorable footage of their little linguist, Xyla.

Because Carissa is Filipino American, she’s teaching 2-year-old Xyla the secondary language of the Philippines, Tagalog — and judging by their sweet video, Carissa’s lessons are paying off.

4 mortgage truths that may surprise you

According to Rosetta Stone, Tagalog is “an Austronesian language spoken by the Tagalog people, who represent a quarter of the population of the Philippines.”

While Filipino is the official language of the Philippines, Tagalog is spoken by over 50 million people in the Philippine Islands.

Tagalog — which, directly translated, means “from the river” — combines language influences from China, Malaysia, Spain and the United States.

In Xyla’s now-viral video, the 2-year-old proudly teaches viewers the Tagalog sentence “Mahal kita,” which means “I love you” in English.

‘Mahal kita, Xyla!’

Viewers around the world applauded Xyla’s language skills.

“She’s the cutest and so smart! Mahal kita, Xyla!” one user wrote in the comments.

“Can’t wait to teach my kids Tagalog when I have them! Making sure they know their Filipino roots will be so special,” commented another user.

“This is adorable! Please make this a series. We can all learn too!” suggested one user.

“Such a smart girl,” another user wrote.

Hopefully, Carissa and Michael will continue to document and share Xyla’s progress with the Tagalog language — and any other adorable things she does.
