1917 wins Best Drama at Golden Globes
2020 might be 1917’s year: Sam Mendes’ World War I epic won Best Drama at Sunday’s Golden Globes.
Filmed to appear as one continuous, uninterrupted shot, 1917 is a tense, nail-biter of a thriller, starring George McKay and Dean Charles Chapman as two British soldiers navigating the front lines of battle. In all, the film was nominated for three Globes, including Best Director and Best Original Score. (Mendes won for director.)
“This is a huge, huge thing for this movie,” Mendes told the audience. “It opens in a week wide. It’s difficult to make movies without big movies stars in the lead and get people to come and see it in a cinema. I really hope this means that people will turn up and see it on a big screen as it was intended.”
Renowned cinematographer Roger Deakins shot 1917, and the film also stars Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Strong, and Richard Madden in small roles.
1917’s Golden Globe win helps cement its status as a major player in the Oscar Best Picture race, beating out fellow nominees Marriage Story, The Irishman, Joker, and The Two Popes. (Other contenders like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Parasite won at the Globes in the Best Musical or Comedy and Best Foreign-Language categories, respectively.)
