It feels like every other day, we're getting some sort of Yellowstone news. (Not complaining!) And today is no different because we just got word that Hollywood native, Dennis Quaid, will be joining 1883: The Bass Reeves Story—just another of Taylor Sheridan's surplus of upcoming shows.
But what exactly is 1883: The Bass Reeves Story, and how does it tie into Yellowstone's ever-expanding storyline? We know it can be a bit confusing, especially for those new to the fandom. But fear not, because here's everything we know about the latest addition to the Yellowstone universe, including information about the cast, premiere, and more.
What will 1883: The Bass Reeves Story be about?
The show will center around Bass Reeves, a real-life legendary lawman of the Wild West. The cowboy was the first Black U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi and is known for making over 3,000 arrests without ever being injured. Reeves is also believed to be the inspiration behind the Lone Ranger. (How cool is that?!) The rest of the storyline is not yet known, but you can count on us to add updates as they're released!
Who's in the cast?
Right now, the only confirmed cast members are British actor David Oyelowo and Hollywood star, Dennis Quaid.
Oyelowo will be playing Reeves, and was the first confirmed actor in the series. He's known for his roles in the acclaimed movies Selma and The Butler. The actor has been having some fun posting about his new role on Instagram, getting fans even more excited for the new spinoff!
According to Variety, Quaid will take on the role of Deputy U.S. Marshall, Sherrill Lynn. While Quaid has previously starred in a few television shows, we're used to seeing him in blockbuster movies since the 1970's, such as The Big Easy, The Parent Trap, and The Day After Tomorrow.
Though Quaid and Oyelowo are the only two confirmed actors, Yellowstone star Cole Hauser (who plays Rip Wheeler on the show) teased a role in the upcoming spinoff.
Speaking with ET at Yellowstone's Season 5 premiere event, Hauser explained that his new facial hair wasn't just for fun.
"I'm switching it up on ya," he told ET. "This is for a role that I did in 1883."
When asked if he could share any more details about his appearance on the spinoff, Hauser simply chuckled and said, "No ma'am."
Where will filming take place?
The show's filming location is not yet confirmed. However, an Instagram post made by Yellowstone star Denim Richards shows numerous actors (including Oyelowo) at Bosque Ranch. The location was used for certain scenes in Yellowstone and 1883, so it seems likely that it will also be featured in 1883: The Bass Reeves Story. (Side note: We are not okay after this photo.)
Is there a release date?
It's unclear when the show will begin filming, let alone be released. But, not to worry. There are plenty of shows like Yellowstone to keep us entertained. Plus, the Yellowstone prequel 1923 is set to return soon after a short break.
With all of this news, we are feeling lots of things. But to sum it up: We. Are. Ready. 🙌
