We’ve seen woman vs. shark in The Shallows, man (and woman) vs. giant snake in Anaconda, and now we have Idris Elba vs. lion in Beast streaming on Peacock right now! It doesn’t get more juicy than that when it comes to a primal action flick.
I’ll give it to you straight: Beast has seen a mix of ratings, scoring a nice 77% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a mediocre 5.6/10 on IMDb. I won’t lie to you: If I saw some of those scores prior to seeing the film, I may have swiftly avoided it. But I didn’t, and my hypocritical self left the movie theater after watching Beast in a good 'post-summer blockbuster B-movie flick' kinda mood.
Warning: Some mild spoilers ahead!
Now that the film is streaming on Peacock, it’s time for you to make your mind up: Will you dive in, or will you avoid it? Here’s 18 reasons why I think you should give it a go:
1.Idris’s badass self.
2.Beast has got an epic director and producer behind it.
Martin, Nate’s best friend and wildlife biologist, may be even more likable than the protagonist thanks to Sharlto Copley’s performance. He brings a ton of warmth to the film as he offers the family a place to stay and acts as their tour guide, but overall, his love and care for the local animals is what shines through.
He’s a charming and likable character who endures a tough, old ordeal throughout the film; plus, his intelligence and knowledge about the animals makes him a perfect contrast against our protagonist. In the end, though, Copley plays a fantastic role and one that brings you back down to earth after a sequence of action films, reminding you that if this was real life, it wouldn't be quite so fun to play out.
5.Leah Jeffries and Iyana Halley’s supporting performances are a hearty addition.
6.The "Man vs. Lion" plot is not that bad of a storyline.
7.No Hollywood sets here...Beast was filmed on location!
8.The cinematography is *chefs kiss*.
9.It delivers big (CGI) cat energy.
10.It’s a little exploration into the life-and-death battles lions face against humans.
11.How about a gripping soundtrack to keep you on your toes?
Out today... my score for #BeastMovie. Had a wonderful time writing this, and working with the amazing @lauramvula, @SonaJobarteh and many other great musicians. The film is released in the US next week, hitting UK theatres one week later on the 26th. https://t.co/1ngurtplIp
Picture this: It’s 10pm on a weeknight, and you want to watch a film before bed. After endless scrolling, you find one to your taste, only for it to be 2 hours 30 minutes long, so with that, the TV goes off, and you end up watching nothing so that you’re not going to bed too late.
I can’t be just speaking for myself on this one after how many times it has happened! But fear not, because Beast is a comfortable, jam-packed 93-minute film, and who really isn’t here for that in the age of ever-increasing lengthy films?
16.The final showdown makes it all the more fun (and debate-worthy).
In the end, it all comes to blows between Idris’s character, Nate, and the furious lion…and if you still don’t fancy watching Beast, at least watch it for the CGI lion-wrestling. Here’s what you can expect to enjoy…
Idris tussling with a lion? Check. Idris stabbing at it with a knife? Check. Idris getting beat to shit by giant claws and teeth? Check.
Idris punching a lion with his bare hands? Wait…what?
Yup, all it took was one final bare-knuckled blow to the lion for Idris to get back on his feet and let his plan for survival play out. This pretty unlikely and unrealistic turn of events was great fun to watch, though!
I also couldn’t help thinking, do you think you’d survive a lion by throwing a punch?
17.Beast defies all logic...and that’s okay (for once).
18.Sometimes, you just want something nice and easy to follow.
