The wild plotline isn't too far-fetched in comparison with modern-day happenings — and it shows viewers just how far someone will go to feel accepted.

2.Hearts Beat Loud (2018)
This feel-good movie centers on Frank (Nick Offerman of Parks and Rec fame) as he attempts to connect with his soon-to-graduate daughter, Sam. In a bid to stay close, Frank tries to persuade Sam to take their love of jam sessions further as a father-daughter live act. Heartwarming and bright with quirky, sweet moments, this isn’t your typical slapstick comedy per se, but it does a good job of weaving together humorous quips within a heartwarming storyline.

This breakout hit became a must-see sensation last summer, and it makes sense as to why. With a strong script, sharp dialogue, and palpable onscreen chemistry, Palm Springs has it all! Following one of the most infamous scandals in Olympic history, this drama-centric story also leans heavily on dark comedy. Based on collected accounts by figure skater Tonya Harding and others, the film also touches on tough moments like her abusive upbringing. Margot Robbie plays Tonya, with Sebastian Stan (aka Marvel's Winter Soldier) as Jeff and Allison Janney as LaVona Golden — which is an impressive amount of star power. Plus, Janney won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her work as Tonya's mom, while Robbie received a nomination for Best Lead Actress.

This classic comedy is a gem. Tina Fey and Steve Carell are great as always as a seemingly normal couple out on a date night...hence the name of the film. When they take on the identity of the Tripplehorns in order to get a reservation at a swanky restaurant, they meet up with some trouble (aka scary men trying to kill them) that then causes a lot of chaos.

6.Support the Girls (2018)
Regina Hall, Haley Lu Richardson, Shayna McHayle, James LeGros, and Dylan Gelula are truly an all-star cast. This movie has it all: humor, lighthearted moments, lasting friendship, and, yes...plenty of laughs, while also shining a harsh light on the misogyny and classism prevalent in the service industry. Protective, tough, and in charge of a group of rowdy twentysomething female waiters at the local town sports bar Double Whammies, Hall is a standout as Lisa, the manager.

7.Heathers (1989)
Even 30 years on, Heathers still hits a sweet spot of twisted dark comedy and biting high school irony. 9.Hello, My Name Is Doris (2015)
This is truly a must-watch movie. It has heart and humor and shows a wonderful side of life. If you're curious as to what it's about, just know that after attending a self-help seminar, Doris (played by Sally Field) gets inspired to pursue her much younger coworker John (Max Greenfield, aka Schmidt on New Girl). 10.Parasite (2019)
Parasite follows the Kim family as they come together to pull off a scam centering on a tutoring service. The black comedy–thriller has won many awards, including Oscars for Best Picture and for Best Director, to Bong Joon-ho, but that’s not why it’s a standout watch. Brimming with an unmissable conscious commentary on class and the societal structures that be, this twisty film does have some light moments, like the Jessica jingle, but fair warning: This movie is darker than it is laugh-out-loud funny.

11.Miss Stevens (2016)
Timothée Chalamet's first big role and Lili Reinhart...what more could you want? The sweet film follows Rachel Stevens (played by Lily Rabe), a high school English teacher trying to just...figure out her life (like all of us!). The movie — with light, humorous, joyous moments interwoven with melancholic scenes — will have you cheering for Rachel in the end.

12.Booksmart (2019)
The comedy to end all comedies and a true ode to lasting female friendship, this Olivia Wilde–directed movie stars the delightful Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever. When BFFs Amy and Molly, two straitlaced seniors looking forward to graduation, decide to venture out on a reckless night of partying, things don't exactly go as planned. Feldstein and Dever's real-life friendship and onscreen chemistry create some of the most quotable dialogue in recent history, reminding us of the best female-focused comedic movies that still stand today. We can't forget about Billie Lourd as the fun-loving Gigi in an iconic supporting role that, for better or worse, steers the film with her hijinks.

13.50 First Dates
50 First Dates is a classic 2004 comedy. Definitely a product of its time, the movie itself is a good watch overall....but by today's standards, it could do with an update. The iconic Drew Barrymore is charming and sweet as Lucy, who frequents a local diner and starts each day with no memory. Then there's Adam Sandler, who is goofy and, uh, interesting as semi-awkward playboy Henry. Plus, there's a lot of Hawaiian button-up shirts, which is a summer 2021 mood.

14.The DUFF (2015)
Bianca (Mae Whitman) is just another high school senior looking to reinvent herself after she gets branded with a mean nickname. The movie, based on the book of the same name, also stars Robbie Amell as love interest Wesley, Bella Thorne as the mean girl, and Allison Janney as the quirky mom. This self-aware comedy is one of self-acceptance, highlighting the importance of personal growth, while also remaining lighthearted and funny despite the premise.

15.Deadpool (2016)
This Marvel film is unlike any other Marvel film in that it's gloriously witty with a strong dose of irony. While past MCU movies, such as Iron Man and Captain America, have funny moments, Deadpool errs on the side of delightfully mocking and caustic. Ryan Reynolds stars as Wade Wilson, playing a different kind of hero with a cynical outlook that takes center stage throughout the film. The Golden Globe–nominated movie wasn't as big a hit by box office standards, but this biting comedy surely belongs on this list because it's a standout story that's become a surefire classic, in my humble opinion.

16.Young Adult (2011)
Young Adult shows Charlize Theron — starring as Mavis Gary, a writer of young adult books returning to her hometown to relive her glory days — at her best and worst. The film doesn't have much of a plotline (besides a woman doing exactly what she wants, which is great), but the overall movie still manages to be fun and funny nonetheless. Midwestern charm FTW.

17.Get Smart (2008)
It's Steve Carell again. This charming, ditsy spy movie isn't the best ever, but it works because it plays into the irony. Carell plays Maxwell Smart, an analyst put in charge of stopping a terrorist plot by a rival agency. It’s a perfectly 2008 comedy, with lots of slapstick comedic moments and explosions, too. Anne Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada, Hustlers, The Princess Diaries) and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson also star.

18.Shrek (2001)
You should watch Shrek because it's a great way to relive the joy of being a child in a movie theater with a tub of popcorn in your lap and not a single care in the world. There's an absolutely iconic soundtrack. There's a fun-loving theme of self-acceptance. There's that iconic line about waffles. There's the fact that it changed animated movies forever.
