Having a certain level of wealth and privilege often seems to change the way people see the world. Sometimes, they don't consider how their words and actions will come across to people of more average means — even when they have no malicious intentions.

Here are 17 times celebs tried to be well-meaning but came across as super out-of-touch:

1.In 2020, Justin and Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner discussed the coronavirus pandemic in a joint Instagram Live. Justin said, "How blessed are we — a lot of people in this time have a crappy situation. They look at us, and obviously, we've worked hard for where we're at. We can't feel bad for the things we have, but us taking that time to acknowledge that there are people who are struggling is important."

Nodding along, Jenner added, "Yeah, I think about it all the time."

The acknowledgement didn't do much to make the viewers at home feel better about their situations.

i’m sure all the newly unemployed are grateful to know justin bieber thought about them being poor

2.Likewise, during early lockdowns, Gal Gadot gathered a group of her famous friends — including Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal, James Marsden, Natalie Portman, and many others — to sing a cover of "Imagine" by John Lennon in an Instagram video.

Commenters criticized it for being cringey.

Gadot later admitted she regretted orchestrating the video, telling InStyle, "It wasn't the right timing, and it wasn't the right thing. It was in poor taste."

3.Brooklyn Peltz Beckham, who's the son of millionaires and the son-in-law of a billionaire, has had several career attempts, including soccer, modeling, and photography. However, when Daniel Mac interviewed him from his $1.2 million car for the "What Do You Do For a Living?" TikTok series, Beckham said, "I'm a chef...just follow your passion, whatever makes you happy."

"My Name's Brooklyn"

In the comments, viewers criticized him for seemingly implying that he was able to afford the expensive car by working as a chef.

"Not him pretending to be a chef got him that car..."
"Born to Victoria and David Beckham"

4.After New York Magazine published its viral 2022 article about "nepo babies," Lily Allen — who's the daughter of actor/presenter Keith Allen and movie producer Alison Owen — tweeted, "The nepo babies y'all should be worrying about are the ones working for legal firms, the ones working for banks, and the ones working in politics, if we're talking about real-world consequences and robbing people of opportunity. BUT that's none of my business."

In her replies, many people pointed out that the conversation around nepotism and privilege wasn't entirely limited to celebs with famous parents.

I think all is connected though - class solidarity that is little discussed in our class-allergic media. celebs are perhaps an easier access pt for most ppl who aren’t familiar w prominent lawyers or bankers. But yes the pattern ABSOLUTELY holds true for all wealthy folks

5.In 2019, rapper MoStack tweeted about spontaneously jetting off to Dubai because he was feeling stressed.

Other Twitter users criticized her for the "embarrassing" response and for seemingly making a national emergency about herself.

"She set herself up with the last sentence"

7.In 2013, Elizabeth Banks told People about the challenges of being a mom of two. Describing the experience she and her husband had celebrating the holidays with just their kids, she said, "[We] had no help, no nannies, no babysitters. It was crazy. You forget how difficult it is to wake up in the middle of the night, how exhausting it is. I lost all my nails. I did dishes and cleaned bottles for 10 days so I lost all those nails!"

A Yahoo Celebrity post poked fun at the interview, concluding with this line: "But she did learn how to play the world's smallest violin, so at least there's that."

8.In 2015, Gwyneth Paltrow challenged herself to do her weekly grocery shopping trip with the same budget as a family in the SNAP program would have.

This is what $29 gets you at the grocery store—what families on SNAP (i.e. food stamps) have to live on for a week. pic.twitter.com/OZMPA3nxij

In her Twitter replies, many people pointed out that her grocery haul wasn't a realistic representation of what families in the SNAP program would buy.

@GwynethPaltrow Although I admire the good intentions when people do this, the fact remains that food stamps are a supplement, not full ride

9.On a 2022 episode of The Kardashians, Kylie Jenner and her mom, Kris Jenner, went to a grocery store because Kylie just wanted "to do normal things with [Kris]." They happily zipped around a high-end market. Afterwards, Kylie said, "I loved every minute of it."

They also went to an automatic carwash, which they compared to "Disneyland." Kylie said, "You know what, this is such a tourist attraction."

12.Discussing her past looks in a 2021 Vogue interview, Bella Hadid said, "I never, growing up, had anything designer. My mom wouldn't let me. I think I got my first pair of Louboutins when I graduated high school. It makes me emotional actually, because I'm so happy in this picture, for the first time in my whole adult life...I feel good about myself, I felt beautiful...compared to [my younger self] she was so sad, and [current me] is so content and happy."

That clip was reposted on TikTok, where it went viral. In the comments, people called out the fact that, as the daughter of millionaire real estate developer Mohamed Hadid, she grew up wealthy, and there's a difference between not being able to afford designer clothes and not being allowed to buy them.

Some viewers took issue with the way she used the term "extreme poverty."

The fact that she can speak glowingly about it definitely signals her son isn’t actually in “extreme poverty”. She so out of touch smh

14.In 2019, Chrissy Teigen tweeted, "My mom treats her AirPods like they're disposable. Buys a few a month. She says they would be easier to not lose if they had...a cord."

Considering AirPods cost over $100 per pair, many of her followers didn't find the story very funny.

literally could your mom buy me a pair

Teigen later followed up her post with an apology for how it came across.

I promise I will not always say the right thing in the right way but I also promise I hate disappointing or pissing you guys off. I’m sorry and I will do better to not be such an asshole.

15.Similarly, in 2021, Chrissy Teigen tweeted about a time she and her husband, John Legend, accidentally ordered a $13,000 bottle of wine.

one time john and I were at a restaurant and the waiter recommended a nice Cabernet. We got the bill and it was 13,000 dollars. HOW DO U CASUALLY RECOMMEND THAT WINE. we didn’t even finish it and it had been cleared!!!

The backlash she received was similar to the criticism surrounding her AirPods story, but this time, she defended herself rather than apologize.

hey, not everything I say on my twitter is going to be relatable to you because it is my life and my twitter and my stories. I see your tweets, I get your jokes, you are so funny, yes, you really nailed me

16.In 2022, Sydney Sweeney told the Hollywood Reporter that she "always wanted to be a young mom," but she worried about getting enough work to support her future family. She said, "I was worried that, if I don't work, there is no money and no support for kids I would have. ... If I wanted to take a six-month break, I don’t have income to cover that."

Considering the fact that most people can't afford to take a six-month break, many people criticized her comments as "out-of-touch." However, speaking to Elle, she clarified that she'd been talking about maternity leave. She said, "I was asked if I wanted to have a family, and I said yes. And then I was asked why I didn't have one yet, and I was like, I don't have time to take even, like, a six-month break. Like, I don't have time to be able to start this family."

17.And finally, in a since-deleted 2020 Instagram post, Madonna sat in her rose petal-filled bathtub and said, "What's terrible about [the coronavirus] is what's great about it. What's terrible about it is it's made us all equal in many ways. And what's wonderful about it is that it's made us all equal in many ways."
