Getting that perfect dewy glow on the apples of your cheeks used to be a little tricky — hastily-applied powder blushes could end up looking streaky, cakey, or a bit overdone. The introduction of cream blushes to the market helped make it easier to get the blended, layered look that appears slightly flushed and healthy, rather than clownish. But with so many options available, it can be tough to know which cream blushes are the best at delivering that rosy, radiant appearance.
Senior MAC Makeup artist, Fatima Thomas is a huge fan of cream blushes. “In its healthiest state, the skin looks creamy and dewy, not matte. That’s why I love using cream blushes because the formulas mimic the texture and the finish that comes with naturally healthy skin.”
Generally, cream blushes are formulated with oils and hydrating ingredients, making them more moisturizing, like hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, and jojoba oil. “These ingredients also make cream blushes better suited for those with dry skin,” says Marisa Garshick, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist in practice at MDCS Dermatology in New York City.
However, it is important to note that cream blushes can contribute to breakouts since they often (although not always) contain more oils. Dr. Garshick recommends looking for noncomedogenic formulas, which means the product won’t clog pores, helping to prevent breakouts.
Aside from giving off a rosy glow, “cream blushes are super easy to apply,” says Kindra Mann, a celebrity makeup artist whose clients include Mandy Moore and Busy Philipps. “I love the sheen it gives off and you can use your fingers to apply it and layer on other products seamlessly,” she says.
