We all want shiny, voluminous locks. But the reality is, for a lot of us, we're dealing with limp strands. I, for one, stress a lot about the state of my hair in regard to thinning on a daily basis (maybe more than I should, to be honest). Healthy hair doesn't come naturally for some people. Some have health problems that mess with hair growth, and others can thank genetics.
In some cases, you can make your locks healthier by eating better, but sometimes you need some extra help—and no, we're not talking about extensions. (Although, we wouldn't say no to those either.) We're talking about supplements that are supposed to help with hair growth and health. We've rounded up some editors' picks and top-reviewed ones below—but note that it's worth chatting with your doctor before starting a new supplement. You never know what kind of side effects there might be.
Hum Hair Sweet Hair Gummies ($25)
These heart-shaped gummies are a favorite of many Who What Wear and THE/THIRTY editors. Personally, these are my go-to for keeping my own hair healthy and shiny. They contain biotin, zinc, B12, PABA, folic acid, and Fo-Ti—nutrients and ingredients that are all supposed to boost hair growth and health. Added bonus: They taste pretty good, too.
Moon Juice SuperHair Supplement ($60)
Our editors are big fans of Moon Juice's products, including the brand's Brain Dust for productivity, and SuperHair doesn't disappoint, either. The supplements contain biotin, kelp, saw palmetto, and horsetail. Plus, it's non-GMO and vegan. The recommended dose is four capsules a day.
Briogeo B. Well Vegan Omega 3, 6, 9 + Biotin Supplements ($38)
Briogeo's vegan-friendly hair supplement is highly rated on Sephora. It contains an algae-derived omega-3 complex, ahiflower, and biotin. One reviewer wrote, "Within the first week, the texture of my hair softened and it looked healthier. Throughout the month my amount of hair fall decreased. Feeling more confident, I've even started to wear my hair down again, rather than forcing it into my usual top knot. I am extremely excited to see what happens with prolonged usage."
Ouai Hair Supplement for Thinning Hair ($28)
I love using Ouai's hair products. The Texturizing Hair Spray is perfect for my extremely low-maintenance (aka lazy) daily hair routine, so I was intrigued when I found out the brand also makes supplements. These contain biotin, silica, ashwagandha, and amino acids and are supposed to hydrate; promote healthy, shiny hair; and prevent breakage. One reviewer gave raving feedback, with one pesky drawback: "I have been using Ouai Thin for about four months. My thin spots are filling in, including my eyebrows. My fingernails are longer and stronger. The only downfall is my mustache, it is growing too."
Hum Nutrition Red Carpet Skin and Hair Health Supplement ($25)
If you don't want to take gummies, Hum also makes supplement softgels that contain antioxidants, vitamin E, and black currant seed oil and are supposed to promote healthy hair and glowing skin. The antioxidants in the supplements are also said to moisturize your skin and hair follicles.
Olly Undeniable Beauty Gummy ($12)
Another gummy option, this one contains biotin, vitamin C, and keratin to support healthy hair, skin, and nails. It's grapefruit-flavored, too. One reviewer said, "The flavor is awesome and delightful saw some improvement in my hair its much softer and my skin is looking better I have been having some issues with my skin and I have been taking them for a month now and I am starting to see some improvements I will be buying again."
Nutrafol Hair Loss Thinning Supplement ($88)
In a clinical study, 80% of women who used this supplement saw an increase in hair growth and thickness. Nutrafol supplements contain ashwagandha, curcumin, saw palmetto, marine collagen, and biotin. Like a lot of supplements, hair growth doesn't happen overnight, and the brand says most people will start to see benefits in three to six months.
Sports Research Biotin Infused with Organic Virgin Coconut Oil ($15)
Biotin can aid in hair growth; that's why it's found in so many of these supplements. This particular kind is infused with coconut oil and is non-GMO-verified. With over 11,000 reviews and a 4.5-star rating, it's one of the most popular biotin supplements on Amazon. One reviewer wrote, "Between using coconut oil directly on my hair and taking another supplement to help hair growth, there is no comparison on how much better this biotin softgel is! I started to see a difference in as little as two weeks! My hair was no longer falling out as much in the shower and I began to see baby hairs growing in where my hair was thinning."
NutraChamps HairFlair ($20)
Labeled as an Amazon's Choice product, this highly rated supplement contains biotin, essential B vitamins, keratin, collagen, and zinc. Plus, it's suitable for all hair types. It's recommended to take two capsules daily.
Philip Kingsley Tricho Complex Hair Nutrition Formula ($68)
This formula includes biotin, vitamin B-12, iron, L-lysin, vitamin C, and vitamin D—all supposed to aid in hair growth and health. The manufacturer says you will start to see results in 12 weeks. Recommended dosage is two tablets daily, one with breakfast and one with lunch.
Vitafusion Extra Strength Biotin Gummy Vitamins ($10)
You can have your gummies and biotin, too, thanks to these supplements. They have a natural blueberry flavor and do not contain high-fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, gluten, dairy, or synthetic dyes.
Viviscal Extra Strength Hair Growth Supplements ($50)
Viviscal has been one of the more popular hair growth supplements for years, with many people reporting major improvements to their locks. Key ingredients include AminoMar, horsetail extract, biotin, vitamin C, and iron. One reviewer wrote, "I've been using Viviscal on and off for years. It's the only hair growth supplement that I feel like actually works, and I've tried a lot! My favorite thing about it, though, is that it's packed with so many other vitamins that are good for you, too."
Keranique Daily Essential Supplements ($49)
Each box contains a 30-day supply of the capsules—ingredients include biotin, niacin, calcium, superfoods, ad B-complex vitamins. One reviewer said, "I've tried at least five different hair supplements over the past three years and I've gone back to this one. I had hair thinning and mild breakage from stress and this supplement made the biggest difference. I tried each brand for six months at least and saw the most growth and thickness after taking Keranique."
Nature's Bounty Optimal Solutions Hair Skin & Nails Extra Strength ($11)
This formula helps support not only healthy hair growth but also skin and nails. It includes biotin, vitamin C (for healthy collagen production), and vitamin E (for skin health). One reviewer said, "No matter how often I washed my hair (every week or two a month—I'm African American) I would have huge hair balls come out with the detangling process. After just three weeks of consistent everyday use my shedding has DRASTICALLY decreased. I know that the vitamins are restoring my hair strength and elasticity."
Naturenetics HairAnew ($30)
Another highly rated Amazon's Choice product, these capsules have over 6000 reviews and 4.5 stars. They contain hair-supporting ingredients like vitamin C, vitamin E, niacin, vitamin B-6, and zinc. They're also vegan, sugar-free, soy-free, and gluten-free.
Nature's Bounty Biotin ($13)
Here's another highly-rated biotin option. This one has 10,000 mcg of biotin per serving and is free of artificial flavors and sweeteners, gluten, and lactose.
Physician's Choice Total Hair ($29)
Physician's Choice Total Hair is formulated with vitamins A, C, D, and B6, biotin, zinc, Cynatine HNS (a soluble form of keratin), and EVNolMax (vitamin E), and bioperine (for better absorption). It's supposed to reduce hair loss and promote thicker, healthy hair.
Keranique KeraViatin Hair & Scalp Health Supplement ($40)
The KeraViatin10 complex contains nutrients like vitamin B6 and B12, biotin, zinc, L-cysteine, curcumin, and bioperine to target thinning hair and promote strength and scalp health. The recommendation is two take two capsules daily for at least three months to see results.
