In the film world, it truly takes a village to bring a character to life. There's a whole team behind the camera, but sometimes, the actor isn't the only person portraying the character on screen.
Doubles replace the actor in certain shots. For example, the actor might have scheduling conflicts during reshoots, or they might need a body double to stand in when they're playing two different characters in the same scene. Doubles can also replace actors for scenes that require a special set of skills — such as a stunt double or a dance double.

For Thor: The Dark World, she wasn't available for reshoots, so Elsa Pataky — Chris Hemsworth's wife — stepped in as her body double for the post-credits kiss scene.
