Whether you’re a comic book fan or not, you’ve heard of the Joker. Since his creation in the ‘40s—when he first appeared in the Batman comics—the Dark Knight’s nemesis has been a crucial aspect of pop culture, depicted in eight movies (and counting) and played by legendary actors like Heath Ledger, Jared Leto, and Jack Nicholson.

Part of the Joker's appeal is simple: he's cunning, mischievous, and manipulative. On top of that, he's sociopathic and unpredictable. And his ability to keep you (and Batman) on the edge of your seats is why no one tops him in the villain department, easily trumping Penguin, Riddler, or even Harley Quinn.

It’s no surprise, then, that we received an origin story of the beloved character back in 2019. Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker broke records and was a box office success, earning 11 Oscar nominations. Fans loved it so much that a sequel is apparently in the works.

"We’re open," Joker director Todd Phillips told Deadline in December 2019. "I mean, I’d love to work with [Joaquin] on anything, quite frankly. So who knows? But it would have to have a real thematic resonance the way this one did, ultimately being about childhood trauma and the lack of love, and the loss of empathy."
